Just as when you read a novel, you construct in your mind's eye the look of a particular scene, the physical characteristics of a character; their voice, their mannerisms, we form pictures of our fellow NSers. Some have actually posted photos, but I find myself rejecting what is offered and going with what I picture from their words...how do you see specific Nsers?

For example: Alien Born
I picture a tallish white man, thin but not emaciated, brownish hair, slightly thinning, no glasses, conservatively dressed, mid forties, with an American accent (why, I'm not sure, but nothing twangy, more like a Canadian accent really). I imagine him as very self-composed, and somewhat scholarly.


Dempublicents:

I picture a twenty-something, willowy white woman with ash-blonde hair and a soft voice, with a somewhat overwhelmed (only at times) manner. (I could be completely wrong.)

Now, some things you might know from photos, or through conversations with someone, but what assumptions have you made in your mind about other NSers?

For one thing...I tend to try to guess gender from a person's name...which works in Spanish, but not for the names used here:). Sometimes I assume wrong, but the picture sticks with me for a while.

I know this will amuse you, but it's really how I picture you.

Okay, white guy, early 30s. Permanent stubble...not unshaven or messy, just a little shadow...light brown hair, short. Average height and weight. Lives in jeans and ball cap. Smokes and drinks a fair amount. Cynical, sarcastic, but genuinely cool and nice. Home is an apartment, a little basement suite with no roomates, and an old brown plaid couch (where this is coming from, I'm not sure). Oh yeah, green eyes, no glasses except sunglasses at night:). Likes Classic Rock and prefers 'pubs' to clubs. Won't date dumb chicks...but he will sleep with them.

And he likes a good sandwich!

I now tell you that I used to play rugby (Forward)and American footballl (DLine), I was brought up in that area of West Surrey that the old fashioned BBC announcers come from, and that my favourite bands are Led Zep, Black Sabbath etc. I currently weigh about 115 Kgs (260lbs ish)

I tend to do the same thing. I believe its because I grew up in one of the smallest towns in Iowa surrounded by only white people.

I'm not Inuit...I'm Cree...plains Cree...we tend to be thin, tall (though I am short) and hawk-nosed. I have a button nose (it's the tainted Irish blood:)), and freckles. FRECKLES!!! Of all the weird mixes....but I'll stop there...don't want to reveal too much...

20 year old. About 6'3" and around 170 lbs. About a medium muscular built. Adams apple does not stick out a lot. During the summer, my hair is a buzz cut. During the winter, it long but not to long.

That is a near perfect description of me. Though I'm more than a little above average height and I don't wear glasses (though my vision is starting to get a tad dodgy from theatre tech looking into bright lights while aiming them).

I picture Euroslavia being perfectly groomed, except with awesome spiky hair, a boy of about 17, fairly pale skin. I picture him wearing a polo shirt and sweatervest, as well as fairly tight (though not spandexy) jeans.

I know what you mean...the only people I picture true to life are the ones whose picture I've seen BEFORE I get to know them in the forum. Everyone else stays pretty much the same in my mind, despite evidence to the contrary.

Try not to be too creeped out. :D I pick up on timing and cadence in the written word like some people can see subtle color changes in paintings.

I find the written word to be mankind's most powerful and most noble form of art and, now and then, I read someone with good cadence and their text reads in my mind like song.

You should try poetry (though I'm willing to bet you already do). Your cadence is very e.e. cummings.

I actually was having a dream the other night where I sat down to my computer and was reading a thread on NS General and I received an official warning by a Mod named "Smokey Pete" for being "Irrational".

I woke up thinking, "My god, I'm a nerd."

Here's my (probably terribly inaccurate) mantal image of Gnostikos: Mid-hight, high school student. Dark hair. No fancy clothing, mostly subdued darkish colors. Wears glasses.

I always seem to picture every one on NS older than they really are. It's when I see some of your pictures and see how so very young some of you are and I know I've spoken in debate or whatever with you, it freaks me out. I some times have a very hard time in text to remember that some of you are so young. That's my biggest thing.

I like to picture everyone here as burly black men with dreadlocks.

Hee, it's funny hearing other people's images of me. I have shortish, straight black hair, I weigh only 120 which is probably underweight for my height of 6 feet, light greyish-blue eyes, and I don't have a car. I've got no Greek or Italian blood in me, mostly Irish and French. The rest is oddly accurate though. I don't buy expensive clothes when I can get cheaper stuff, I read most of my books over and over and they all have tears and dents and such, and I randomly switch between intensity and irreverance. Very nice. I probably think about how people sound because of my musical nature. I'm always singing. Music is like therapy for me. I listen to everything from Jazz to rap. It's a very important part of my life. I would like to learn to play the guitar so I can sing and play at the same time. But I'm so not good at multi-tasking.

I hate my voice because I sound like a DJ for a black metal radio station or something. My voice is often flat and emotionless when I'm not paying attention, and it has no recognizable accent, but something altogether different and odd. When I'm manic, I tend to talk reallyloudly, so my voice is often strained, meaning I speak really quietly when in a normal mood usually.

One funny thing is, when I sing, I tend to sound totally different, my friends have told me I sound a little like Jarboe from The Swans.

My favorite thing, though, is that due to me being transsexual and having to learn to speak like a female, I am excellent at doing imitations. I can do a good one of Paris Hilton, and I can do a hilarious one of a Russian man. What's fun is, get a play script and be every character, and use a different voice for each.

I'm probably ok with them legalising weed. I don't know about all drugs though. Although I must admit, for them to be criminal seems silly. Whether it's legal or criminal if people want to use them they will. Seems like a good tax base for the government instead of drug dealers. Could protect the safety of people better. The money could go into rehab instead of sending people with a problem to jail.

Also, Ithink you're liberal, but not insanely liberal. A realist might be a better term than liberal. I too think that people with drug habits need help and not punishment. lol, pretty far off. my proportions are about the same as hers, but beyond that we don't look much alike. also, i am little (5'2") and i think she's quite a bit taller than i. also, i almost never remember to wear my glasses (though i am all but blind without them).

still, that's a relatively flattering comparison, all things considered. Linda Cerdellini is pretty cute, at least in the pics i found of her.

the age is durn close. as above, i think my proportions wouldn't qualify as "thin," but i wouldn't say i'm fat either...i'm more breasty than i like, and i definitely have some booty, but i have managed to keep in fairly good shape despite a sedentary academic career path. i'm determined as hell, virtually never serious, and i actually do wear tank tops and jeans a great deal. i couldn't put on lipstick to save my life, but (strangely enough) i have naturally redish lips so the image isn't that far off.

I can't really argue with you, you flatter me so. Yeah, I don't cotton myself some insane lefty. I tend to be realistic about most things. I'm probably more a classical liberal, then how the term is used today. I think far too much. I try to find practical solutions, but I am some what still an idealist for being so old..lol I care about people, no doubt about that. I have been a leader in many things in my life. I'm a mother of two, which also gives you those qualities too. (But of course they can be acquired in other ways as well). As for true beauty, I guess that's a matter of opinion, but thank you. :)

I know what you mean. I don't have any kids myself, but I am a very caring person. I think being a mother is the easiest and best way to get that quality, as I got that from my mother. Another is religion. I am a protestant who tries like hell to be a good Christian, but fails sometimes. It's not easy, but I believe it's worth the risk to be the way I am.

P.S. Why do you refer to yourself as old? I don't picture you as being a day over 27.
