In my opinion this is the greatest TV show of all time. Are there any of you out there who watch SG1? What do you all think of it? what is your favourite episode?
Willamena

It's a wonderful show. Stargate: Atlantis, too.

It would be hard to pick just one favourite episode. I suppose one favourite is from season 6, where Sam is trapped alone aboard the Prometheus and has a concussion. The guys appear to her as halucinations and help raise her awareness of some important things in her life.

Its a pretty fun show. Keeps things light hearted usually and has interesting plots. I like the blunt nature of the team leader, damn my mind is blanking and I can't remember his name.

I find it amazing how all people they encounter seem to be able to speak perfect English while writing is always some long dead language. Makes you wonder what they need Daniel and his linguistic skills for.

Love the show, my favorate episode is the "Groundhog Day" episode where jack and Tylk(however you spell it) get stuck in the time loop. Freaking hillarious.

At least on Startrek they have the universal translator which explains this miracle.

Argh. Despite actually enjoying the show, I am forced to hate it, as it was a big reason Sci-Fi gave up on Farscape, which I absolutely love.

I love this show, watch it when I can, and have seen all the episondes through season 7, and a few since.

Amazing how you can take some of the ideals of this show and apply them to some of the "unkowns" of our own ancient world and they seem to fit so perfectly.

I hate that episode. I just absolutely loathe it, having seen it far too many times... and containing virtually no action.

I thought it was annoying when Jack promotted as he rarely gets in anything active.
The reason why they all speak perfect English is because Ra transported Humans through the stargate. Most of the aliens they encounter are actually humans. They need Daniels linguistic skills as the ancient languages are often very important (The meaning of Life from the episode 'The torment of Tantalus) Plus without Daniel SG1 would probably never have met Thor or any other ancient race (besides the Nox)

The reason why they all speak perfect English is because Ra transported Humans through the stargate. But Ra didn't transport 20th-century Englishmen throughout the galaxy, but mostly Egyptians from over 3000 years ago (after which the star-gate was buried before english ever came into existence). Being human does not imply speaking english, (except in american TV-shows :P)

the ancients spoke english too in lots of episodes, but jack spoke in ancientish (?) once or twice and it never sounded anything like english, just another plot device. i think 'suspension of disbelief' is the relevant phrase here.

I wrote that aliens they met are human is because that is what SG1 consider them.
The ancients speak English because Jack was human and they asumed he could understand. (And they are not ancients. They are the Asgard. The Ancients are a seperate race.)

The 4 races that are the alien UN are:
1.The Asgard
2.The Nox
3.The Ferlings (or something)
4. The Ancients.

My favourite episode the one where they opened a portal to a planet being sucked up to a black hole. And time moves really slowly in the SGC.

General Hammond: I have been gone for over 22 hours Col. The president and I puled an all nighter.
O'Neill: 22 hours? I thought you were on the phone?

It's a good show. I've kinda lost the series, though. I neglected one series of it, and now I go back to watch new episodes and i'm like "Teal'c has hair? WTF?" etc.

:(

I'll have to borrow some DVD's, methinks. :)
The Abomination
18-02-2005, 18:31
Teal'c gets hair? NOOOO!

Damn terrestrial UK channels!

That time loop plot occurs in nearly every single sci-fi series on one way or another, but without doubt the SG1 was the No1. The juggling... oh my goodness the juggling... ROFLMAO. Literally.

The series has superb concepts but the scripts and the characters are beyond superb, simply incredible. The acting is top notch.

And Daniel is the king of the akimbo berettas. Beats even Lara Croft for cool archeologists.

Actually, the ancients didn't speak, they used telepathy, but some who survived to make it into SG-1 stories used their telepathy to learn English.

Having everyone speak English is a time-honoured serial television writer's convenience, that's all.

Plus on the official SG1 site the writers say that they do not wish to spend ages at the begining of each ep deciphering languages. Remember how long it took in the movie for them to beable to interact with the people on Abydos?

And if they had a universal translator that would just get boring, at least with all english you get all the different kinds of humans variets of English (Vikings, Indians, Mongolians)

And some of their native language does get brought over into the English (In the episode 'Thors Hammer' The Goa'uld are called 'Etkins')

I love Tea'lcs character. Christopher Judge plays it amazingly, he always has that confused, yet serious look on his face. And in the earlier episodes when Tea'lc was dumb to earth sayings and such, Judge really pulled off the confussion with great acting.

SG1 is one of my favourite shows too :) Though I, too, do not have a favourite episode...

By the way, talking of cool archeologists, is Indiana Jones not cool then?

I also like Atlantis, though not nearly as much; 2 of the main characters (the military leader dude, I forget his name, and Elizabeth Weir) annoy me by trying too hard to be O'Neill and Hammond respectively.

The lucky Git. I love Amanda Tapping!!!!!!!!

I like the episode called family, where Apothes is in Ryacs body. He acts all nice towards Tea'lc and then spits right in his face. I thought it was funny.

+ in that episode Braytak tricks the jaffas. : Jaffa Kree, The traitor is in the castle.

The jaffas wonder over only to find O'niell waiting with one of those 1 hit stun, 2 hit kill weapons.

Aha....so when Ra abducted people from ancient Egypt they already spoke English...right....why didn't I think of that? But they use hyrogliphs (sp) for writing instead of the Latin alpahbet. And the Germanic people from that ep with the hammer of Thor just happened to speak the same English.... :D

English spoken in Egypt approximately 10,000 BC?

As for all these humans conveniently speaking English on these different worlds, maybe SG-1 has one of those "handy-dandy" intergalactic translaters... :D

In the movie, Stargate, the humans on Abydos were speaking ancient Egyptian.

Yeah. But Daniel stayed with them so that they have some grip of English isn't all that suprising. As for the rest...I guess the Goa'uld just value bilangualism in their subjects. :D

I've loved the series since it was started, hell since the movie. I've seen almost all of the older episodes..but I'm bad about watching the new ones because they come on on Friday nights..grr. I need TiVo or something...

You all seem to have made the same mistake. I take it none of you actually watched the film? The first place that Ra went was africa (i think). whos to say he didn't abduct others nationalities along the way. The Stargate was buried after Ra left so he visited Egypt last. He could have ventured to all other countries first.

It just makes the plot easier, give them a break. They did the whole language barrier problem in the movie, it gets old after a while.

This is news to me.

FYI: "But English was not the original speech of the island(Britain). In the modern form in which we know it, it can, indeed, hardly lay claim to a higher age than five hundred years."

Enough of this nonsense about the ebglish language and why the aliens can speak it so fluently. Back to the important thing...SG1!

SG1, arguably the best sci-fi show aired on tv.

Ever. :D

Richard Anderson really backed a winner with this show, mind you, hell, I remember driving round essex the day the movie was released on VHS trying every single shop to find one that had it in stock :p

There's just one thing that bothers me about it though, now that the world is pretty far advanced with the whole thing, why continue to keep it a secret? With this in mind, how can earth be considered such a galactic power considering this?

Anyways, my favourite ep so far is where a barber touches this ancient crystal thingy-majig and starts seeing things from SG1's missions through oneils eyes.
