Steroids and the single season HR record

I have picked up a copy of Juiced and whether or not you like Canseco, he is right about the rampant steroid usage.

Three people he named who stick out are Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Sammy Sosa. These three bufoons are the current leaders on the single season HR leader board. Even before Jose Canseco's book we knew these lowlifes were on the juice.

Now, who is number 4 on the list? Roger Marris. He hit 61 homers in 1961 while playing for the NY Yankees. Unfortunately, an asterick stood by his name until 1992. Marris died before it was removed. People believed he shouldn't have had the record since he did it in a 162 game season and Ruth did it in 154.

If people put an asterick by Marris' name because they didn't want Ruth's record broken, then they ought to strike the records from the three steroid using bafoons who cheated and made a mockery of the efforts made by greats such as Ruth, Mantle, and Marris.

Marris, even though they put that damned asterix beside it.

(Have you seen the movie 61* by the way? It's excellent.)

Mantle, for what its worth would have done it too, damn it Yankees - they're even predjudiced between themselves. Sheesh.

I also hope Giambi and Canseco get their MVP's stripped. THen Frank Thomas can be a 3 time MVP.

He was very careful though to say that he did not know for sure about Bonds. All he says is that he has no doubt in his mind.
All the same Marris.

Sports has become a disgrace. It's about pure human talent, not some crap you inject into your system to make you better. How can you measure human achievement if it's not done entirely by the human?

That is true, but we already knew of Bonds from the Balco trial. I mean his own trainer testified under oath that Bonds was on steroids.

Its a shame that so many players feel it necessary to 'beef up.' I love baseball, but it makes me sick to see so many players on steroids. Too much attention nowadays is put on power and homeruns. And no, the league is not doing enough to prevent these things from happening.

One thing I respect my team (THE WHITE SOX) for is that they restructured their team around fundamentals. The Sox will continue to hit a ton of HRs since USCF is the most hitter friendly park in the MLB due to the wind conditions. But, they will do it without the huge power hitters. The Sox are built around pitching, defense, and speed. They look a lot like the Go Go Sox of the 1950s, Chicago's last World Series team.

Until it can be proven McGwire did something against the rules, he should keep the record. Andro may be a performacne enhancer but it wasn't banned. Sammy used a corked bat and Bonds admitted to using them, even if he didn't know what they were.

Now to throw the cat in amongst the pigeons.

Why should steroids be banned? Simply open up the game to performance enhancing drugs. This would allow the abuses and serious damage that can occur with these drugs to be prevented by having real medical supervision.
The game is a spectacle, and entertainment for the public anyway. No amount of testing will ensure that the players are clean, so go the other way, legalise and regulate the PEDs

By the way Maris has one "R", Sosa has an "A" at the end not an "O", and it's McGwire not McGuire. If you want to start a thread please know how to spell all the names properly. You obviously are not that big a fan of baseball if you don't know how to spell Maris' last name. :D

I will agree that steriods are destroying sports, especially baseball. I played baseball at the University of Texas and we had far more strict rules to follow than the professionals. If any of our coachs thought we were on steriods we were tested. If you tested positive you lost your scholarship and were destined to have to leave school. The point though is even if Bonds and Giambi or anyone else test positive the MLB won't do anything. They have already admitted and yet nothing has happened to punish them.

You can love to watch a sport, that is not necessarily even part of your culture, without having to learn how to spell every name involved.

Otherwise. The point about steroids being legalised that I made in the post prior to yours, is a differetnt matter at the college level. Most college players never make it to the professional ranks, they should not risk the damage that steroids etc. can do. Here the responsability does fall on the coaches, the other college staff, and on the parents. These are people who should notice any abnormal development spurts etc.

I typed this thing in a rush. I know how to spell McGwire and Maris. The Soso was intentional. Being a Sox fan, I intentionally did that since I think Sammy is overrated.
