I always thought the meaning of life was an individual thing, that it's up to each of us to discover our own meaning.

I always thought a dictionary was the best place to look up meanings of words.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=life gives me plenty of meanings of life.

Wrong and plagerised. You should put it in quotes or give the author credit

Catholic Meaning
The meaning of life is to prepare you for your spiritual life

Secular Meaning:
Life has no purpose; it's just a random happening

I disagree. I'm not a religious person and I don't believe in an afterlife really, but I do think there is more to life than just random happenings.

That's not the meaning of life. That's the answer to the universe, dummy? There is no meaning to life. Do you think someone just stuck us here for a purpose? NO. Get a life (if you'll excuse the expression). That's it, we're all here because there are too many clean planets, and our purpose is to dirty some up!

Well, it would have been more effective as an argument if you had specifically stated WHAT else you thought there was to life....

The meaning of life really isn't that important. What's more important is HOW you find the answer. If you go ask people, then you aren't really living. How can you understand life if you don't live? Thus, to find out what life is all about, you must LIVE.

Lord Henry could tell you a great deal more about HIS philosophy on life, but currently he's busy with Dorian Gray.

But it's more than 42 that makes the book remarkable. For example, why hasn't the phrase "bistro math" seen greater use? That's far funnier.

Besides, every repetition of some 42-related joke just lessens the overall fun reserves of the book, just as every repetition of "nazi" lessens the overall horror reserve of the holocaust. Self-invoked Godwin's law.

Anyway, what I'm saying, is that when people quote the Simpsons, they don't just say "d'oh" over and over again. They actually tap into the remarkable source material.

life has no meaning, rather, it has a purpose. the purpose is quite simply to continue it's population for if it didn't it wouldn't exist anymore.

Ooh! Good question!

That's when the spaceship with the aliens comes down... a tip of the hat to Douglas, who was in most of the last series of Python (read: most of the episodes without John Cleese.)
