WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy will commission its newest nuclear-powered attack submarine Jimmy Carter Feb. 19, during an 11 a.m. EST ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, Conn.

The attack submarine Jimmy Carter honors the 39th president of the United States.

...A boomer I could understand, but a fast attack boat? Why would you doom the poor bastards on that sub with such a lousy name?

President Carter is the only U.S. president to have qualified in submarines. He has distinguished himself by a lifetime of public service, and has long ties to the Navy and the submarine force. Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946, served as a commissioned officer aboard submarines, and served as commander-in-chief from 1977 to 1981. Carter's statesmanship, philanthropy and sense of humanity earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Given that, I think it's pretty appropriate to name a sub after him. Makes more sense then naming a carrier after Regan...

I about died laughing when i first heard this crap! Carter was the biggest threat to our military in years. It was a complete freakin wreck. Iran students werent scared of it. :gundge:
Took some balls, courage and leadership of Reagan to get it back up and running. Now your seeing what Reagans military policies did. I say we name our first DeathStar after good ol Ronny. Hell, I would name two aircraft carriers after Reagan before I put little jimmy's name on a Navy row boat.

There must be a better way...

First we'll rename all the public service buildings named after Reagan after Jimmy Carter.

Then in honour of Reagan's legacy we'll name all the American funded death squads "Reagan Units".

Everyone goes home happy, except poor people, but who cares about them?

Why? Reagan Deserved to have a Carrier named after him! Carter does not. He deserves to get this attack boat however. I find it funny that his name is on a boat that goes underwater.

Personally, I like Sea Wolves better than the USS Walter Mondale, but that's just me ;)

The really weird thing is how they name stuff after living presidents now, it used to be you waited till they were dead. WTF is up with that?! That used to be how we would distinguish ourselves from tin pot dictators in the third world like Sadam who put their pictures up all over the place. At least Reagan was brain dead when they named a carrier after him but Carter?

Well the choice really isnt up to anyone with signifficant power. The person who names ships is the secretary of the navy. Although I agree naming an attack boat after Carter while he's alive seems abit wrong. Better yet not only wrong in the sense he's still alive but wrong in the face the man wasnt really known for being a military morale booster. Kinda hard to be proud of the US when your own C&C says the country is in a decline. If anything Carter should have a reasearch ship named after him or an exploratory submarine..or a submarine they test new technology on before incorporating them into attack boats and boomers.

Who knows, maybe Carter is dead, or severely ill. He uses a stunt double in public, as you should know.

The Navy should have stuck with the old naming system:

Submarines- named after fish and other marine life (USS Stingray, etc.)
Destroyers- named after people (USS Fletcher, etc.)
Cruisers- named after cities (USS San Francisco, USS Indianapolis)
Battleships- named after states (USS Missouri, etc., and yes, I know we don't have them any more)
Aircraft Carriers- named after battles or famous ships (USS Lexington, USS Bonhomme Richard, etc.)

You could tell what kind of ship it was just from the name. Not any more.

It's named the USS Jimmy Carter because Jimmy Carter served something like 9 years in the navy. He was a qualified nuclear engineer and was heavily involved in submarines.

Now does it make more sense?

Agreed. Although with BBs out, the SSBNs took over the names of states. You can only tell if its a sub or not.

Attack class-Cities(LA,San Juan, NYC)
Boomer-Alabama etc etc..

Even this is getting messed up though with the new Virginia attack subs. THOSE are getting states names.

With Republicans in charge for the foreseeable future, the only hope that Clinton has of having any Federal building or Naval vessel or Army base named after him is if somehow the law changes and allows the military to have official brothels (much like the French Foreign Legion does today).

I could then see an official Navy "brothel ship" named the USS Clinton.

I'm not sure I would want to share such few women with so many other men.
The site I lkinked above says this:
UPDATE: On October 12, 2000 the Legion was ordered to accept women into its ranks. Follow this link to CNN for more on this news item. FURTHER UPDATE: According to a statement by Legion spokesman Lt. Col. Yann Peron, the announcement that women would be allowed to join was due to a "miscommunication." Changes that will allow women to serve in almost every function in the French Army would not apply to the Legion, although female officers may be able to transfer from military schools. An article concerning this development appeared in the November 5, 2000 edition of the New York Times.
