What is the best form of government in your opinion

I like America's current form of government the best.(federal republic) I know it's not perfect, but I like better than most other forms of government in the world. Although I'll never know what their like probably because I plan on living in the U.S. the rest of my life.

Personally... i like Supranational government the best... like the EU.. presiding over many nations. but for a single nation.. I like the Federal republic we have here in America

The EU has a good idea going...a single currency and many of the same laws, but so long as some issues can be handled locally, it's all good. A broad-based federal republic that keeps tabs on business without handcuffing it, emphasizes civil rights over moral values, and has a degree of political freedom proportional to political knowledge of its populace (preferably with both of those high) is the ideal form of government.

In an ideal world,..none.

In this world, a Constitutional Federal Republic. A system similiar to America's, but with further measures to assure the reality of being a 'Republic' within said Constitution.

Personally, a more centrist country, where the liberals or neo-conservatives aren't pushing their agenda constantly. The happy medium of not feeling you'll get f*cked either way. It will be possible in due time.

I think whatever government you have, the best thing to do is to try to put power in the hands of local authorities, based on the principle that those closest to a situation will best understand what needs to be done. Personally, I tend to support limited government, and agree that federalism works well. A supranational state, like the EU, while an interesting concept, seems to me to be fraught with too many obstacles to success.

National Socialism!

Er.. rather...

I think a Constitution is essential for any good government, to start. Some sort of written charter that outlines what the government can [and cannot] do, as well as how it functions. I don't like unwritten constitutions [too easily screwed around with] and of course, I don't like absolutism.

I prefer democracy, but the sort of democracy entirely depends on the culture it's implemented in. The democracy of Athens wouldn't work in the United States, because most people don't like to vote, most people aren't informed on the issues and most people value extremism more than centrism/moderation. A more adversarial system is neccessary, and one in which representatives are elected, as opposed to any Joe.

Ideally a completely transparent government.

An inverted Big Brother where government officials and politicians are bugged 24 hours a day and rewards are given to the public for denouncing them.

Does anyone know of a system that comes close in reality?

Any that doesn't use "major" and "minor" parties.

Effectively, one without a single party majority - but rather a percentile holding by each majority, according to the populace's philosophical standpoint. Requires voting to be mandatory, but you don't get people whinning as much about the crappy decisions the government made.

i don't think I'd enjoy my freedom from the tyranny of law very much as i walked the 15 miles to work because there wasn't a road my car was capable of going on, only to find that my work had been looted because we hadn't kept up the protection payments to the local warlord. because then I'd be unable to get bread to carry home to my kids who didn't have a school to go to and in fact there probably wouldn't be a home because there are lots of people much more capable of devastating violence than I am who have homes less appealing than mine.

smaller the better and is there to serve the people rather than have the people serve them.

The EU is intinsically floored because there are countless examples of the ruling elite coming first over the common citizen, and also over the member countries. It is not even democratic- who exactly voted for Barroso, Mandelson and six former communists to be the most powerful men in our lives.

big is good too. if national governments become less and less powerful, and the EU becomes more powerful, there won't be any tony blair and stuff, and as much as we don't know who voted for barroso and mandelson, we don't know what they do either.

As soon as there's a president and cabinet for the whole EU, they won't know or care what's happening in north yorkshire, it'll just get on with its own governing. Maybe.

Centrist democracy but a monarch figure head (that controls the army).

I find that we need an everlasting figurehead, a symbol of power to keep the government in check. Then again, can't gurantee the monarch would get corrupted or power hungry. :p

yeah the EU is a really good way to get everyone comfortable with world government. But like it says on our $1 bills, novus ordo seclorum, or a new order of the ages. (the best way to hide something is in the open) anyways, i like certain forms of socialism.

I agree, although for small, relatively well-informed communities, some form of direct democracy would probably work best.

One thing that seems to be a constant for effective, non-oppressive governments is that they trust the people to decide what is best for them. Any time an elite is installed as the governing group, oppression in one form or another usually follows.

Unfortunately it's only a pipe dream but, in this order:

A non-Totalitarian government. There needs to be some opportunity for revolt.
An Honest government. The peopleneed to know what their leaders are doing.
A Democracy. The people should have say in how they are led.
A Socialist government. From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.

Failing that, a comdey pseudo-anarchic government which is overthrown by other anarchists every couple of days. And maintains the policy that everyone folowing the ruling party (which ever that may be) must wear clown hats.

The best form of government that has actually existed is the socialist democracy with a parliamentary system of representation. The best form of government in a utopian society would be a communist government.

Australia has an interesting Senate. The people in it basically run on the slogan "Keep the bastards honest" and seem to compete to see who can expose the biggest scandal/stupidity in the rest of the government.

Not sure it was planned that way - but it makes for good journalism.

Aside: A lot of the lack of transparency in the USA today is attributable to a lazy press. In a nation where the press will praise you if you're 'theirs' and bash you if you aren't, pretty much regardless of what you do, the press has abdicated its responsibility as the objective scrutineer and left society without one.

A 'true' communist 'government' isn't a government - the state will have withered away leaving only the people (asuming you are talking about a vaguely Marxist model).

Hahaha! I HIGHLY recommend people check out some footage of what its like in the Australian Parliment, particularly in the Lower House. Each session basically exists as a shouting match between the two Major Parties. With Mr. Speaker acting like a beleagured schoolteacher, trying to get people to shut up and frequently throwing members out when they don't!

Spoken like Dubya. Almost to the word.

Personally I'm becoming more and more enamoured of the Imperial Chinese mandarinate.

Get a bachelors in political science and criminology and you'll eventually be appointed as sherrif of a small town.
Get a masters and you'll eventually be a mayor... somewhere.

Problem is that somewhere you need someone who's job it is to chop the heads off of whoever gave Bush a degree.

I think that the worlds legislatures should replace their current debate formats with debates in an online forum just like this.

The Senators (or ministers or what have you) all have accounts allowing them to post their say and the citizens can then come and really see what their representatives are saying and hold them to account.

The Speakers job would just be to take spam... er fillibuster posts, and put them into a spam folder so that anyone really interested in what crap might be getting hidden from them can go and see it but the rest of us will be spared.

Flames however stay up that way here in America we all get to see that Senator Rick Santorum called gay people turtle fuckers.

The feudal system!

Well balanced, economically powerful, local government free to rule but centrally coordinated. The kind of system you would love to run, but hate to have run over you! A bit more demos kratos (without undermining the hierarchy) and your away.
