Broke my %(*@%(^ LEG! Grrrrr!

Eutrusca

Yesterday, I was on my way back from my son's house across our little town here and had to take evasive action to avoid a tactor-trailer rig. Ran up onto a lane-divider which was painted. The font wheel of my mountain bike didn't grab the median. The bike threw me, my right foot caught in the frame of the bike, and snapped my right shin in two places. Now I've got a cast on my right leg which weighs a ton!

I suppse now I'll need to add mountain biking to the ever-growing list of things I can no longer do. SIGH! :(

I suppose this means that you will have nothing better to do than populate these boards a bit more. So at least we gain from your misfortune.

Well, at least you'll have more time to browse NS (as if you needed it :D ). Get well soon!

Medical Inquiry/Comment: At least it wasn't your femur. That's way worse (I think).

Femur would definitely be harder to break, and therefor, i would imagine, would take longer to heal.

Yep. I shattered the femur on that same leg in a parachute jump gone back back in 1996. Stayed in the hospital for three months and in a wheelchair for six. :(

Yeah, femur breaks are rather concerning to doctors. There is a danger of a really nasty medical condition called DIC with them. It basically causes your blood to clot throughout your body, which is both painful and rather damaging. Get well soon Eutrusca.

Poor baby...I wondered where you had gotten off to and was starting to worry. Glad it was your leg and not your neck! You know you can get a lot of mileage out of this if you play it right. Think of all the kids and grandkids waiting on Papa! Seriously, though, keep it elevated and mind your doc's instructions.

As for the femur thing, I shattered my entire right femur and the ball of my hip in a wreck. It took 6 surgeries and almost 2 years in a wheelchair. I wasn't allowed to even touch my toes to the floor. It works pretty good now, but I had to give up my centerfold spread because of the scar. :(

Was it a clean break?

I had a friend break his shin during a martial arts sparring exhibition and cut it clean across; he had to learn how to walk on it again.

I'm glad to hear it's at least not that bad.

Get well soon! Don't count yourself out, yet, on that mountain bike... :)

Mine was broken in two places about three inches apart from twisting force on the leg. They debated for quite awhile about whether to put a pin through the entire fibula, but decided to put the leg in a cast first and see how that works out.

I'll "count myself out" when that first shovelful of dirt hits the top of my coffin! :D

Man, that's some tough luck. At least you have a halfway decent story to tell, though. I know firsthand how unpleasant casts can be, only my stories suck. I've only ever had digit fractures but somehow that's resulted in either full or partial arm and leg casting. The worst was when I was on crutches for two months after breaking my LITTLE TOE. A cast past the knee, all because I broke my LITTLE FREAKING TOE.

How did I break it? I ran into a door.

I broke my leg back in 1982 playing hockey. Spiral fracture of the femur just above the skate and fractured tibia just below the knee. Breaking it wasn't that painful.....however when they tried to reset it in the hospital, it took several people to hold me down!! Now that hurt.

Best wishes and don't kick the dog!!

Doors are t3h 3v3l. Moving forward, big heavy door swinging backward, little toe not going the same way as the others. I sympathise. I don't think mine even broke, though the way the school sister squeezed it as she mopped up the blood and put a plaster on it makes me wonder if I had....why are nurses so cruel?
