Do videogames encourage violence?

I dont think so, in fact I think it is the biggest load of pig crap I have ever heard (except for someone saying Bush is a good president, but this isnt about politics) I mean where did they come up with that some PTA meeting or something? First of all. If vice city makes you want to grab a gun and start killing people (because in the game you do just that) does playing Mario Brothers make you want to jump on someones head and have a coin pop out of their ass? I havent seen much of that. Maybe the reason there are murders in the world is because people are opressed, or ignored, or insulted till they can stand it no longer. But if you think that violence is because of videogames I will gladly listen to any logical statement you have to offer.

No, no, no. Video games don't make people violent. They just make them better at violence. Because everyone knows all violence is committed with thumbs and button-pressing.

That may be somewhat true, at least the movie part, on the tv show 24 there was an episode and some guy parked his pickup on train tracks and the train crashed, did anybody catch that? Well perhaps you witnessed what happened in California 3 days later.

I thought they were committed with an XBox and a broadband connection.

However with videogames name one where a new idea is released. I mean of course in Vice City you can purchase a sniper rifle and blow peoples heads off in broad daylight and more people keep coming, but in real life guns must be registered, and noone looks past a guy standing in the street with a gun.

I dont know whether or not he watched that episode of 24, or even if he got it from tv, however what a coincidence that it happened right after that episode.

Hm, so perhaps those people who would like to get rid of all the violent videogames should shift their platform and say that they should be abolished before some nutjob goes and kills someone creatively rather than in some old-fashioned way.

Hey, while we're at it, we should probably do the same for movies, television and book...oh, wait, nevermind the books; people don't read any more...well, except for all those quiet, bookish kids that come to school and shoot their classmates. Ok, nix the books too...

Question: which is more likely to lead to violence - bored teenagers sitting in their living rooms playing video games, or bored teenagers hanging about on the street corners not playing video games?

I'll have you know that I have not yet shot any classmates. Yet. Come perilously close several times, yes, but haven't done so. :p

People park their cars on train tracks quite often, sadly. My dad works for the LA Sheriff's Department, and he currently works with the Metro system - Metrolink trains and the subways and buses and what have you - and he used to do fatal traffic collisions, including ones involving trains. People getting hit by trains like that is far more common than one would think.

Edit: To answer the topic - no, video games don't cause violence. It's not the fault of video games that it's so fun to kill people.

Almost every study has shown that videogames do not encourage violence. Video games improve the eye-hand coordination much faster.

It's all a load of bull. Videogames don't encorage violence, they actualy decrease it because if kids are 'expresing' there anger in a game then there less likely to do it in real life.

all i know is that after playing grand theft auto, i do have the urge to fight the police.

of course, i had that urge before they even made the game.

If violent video games led to violent behavior, I would have gone on a rampage a long time ago. Just because a few kids that played video games shot up their school doesn't mean the rest of us will go psycho.

No it doesnt change or start anything if video games make you want to kill or hurt people you had problems from the start. people ahve to be less of tools and start looking at them selves then blaming others or objects. its always someone elses fault no one takes responsibility for what they do...(aka left wing liberals)

Wanna know what promotes violence? When the IT department at your school punishes you by taking your ability to play your favorite video game away just because some idiot unleashed a virus on the server. It basically makes you want to take you of these :sniper: and use it. But playing said game does not have a similar effect.... Addiction is fun.

Yes videogames encourage violence.
I mean there was never violence before computer games. it all happened after kids playedgames. Same with movies!!!
I think ppl need to stop looking at the outside of things and begin to look at the deep lying problem. If a perosn is violent then its because of something inside them.
I have been playing games like street figter andm ortal kombat since i was 6. and i have never triedto electricute anyone, or rip outtheir hearts.
It really makes me laugh when ppl blame computer games.
When a kid pretend to be a computer game cahracter. He's jus playin! Before computer games a kid wpuld pretend to be whoever a local hero was atthe time. Its jus society!
People who say computer games / movies/ books/ next doors pet dog! are jus looking for an excuse!

Video games don't cause violence, people do. That said, video games contribute to the likelihood that people will behave violently and in what manner they will execute said behavior. Video games are one possible factor in a list to numerous to mention that contribute to violence. Everything from the weather to the color of the clothes you're wearing has an impact on human violence.

Hey, more importantly, it's supposedly a scientifically proven fact that playing video games makes you less fit.

Isn't it harder to stab someone to death when you have a coronary halfway through and die?

All governments should institute compulsary 8 hour video game sessions for all people every day and ban physical activities. That ought to do it.
