I've been watching the box set of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and I just noticed something odd. You know how there's that storyline with Shinji and Asuka having to "get synchronized", so they're forced to do the same thing and wear the same thing and stuff like that? I think it's in either episode 9 or 10. Well, I just noticed that twice since then that I've noticed, Shinji has had women's clothing on, not connected to that storyline.

Did he take to crossdressing or something?

Shinji is rather feminine-acting. The first time I saw the show, I thought he was just a butch-looking girl for 3/4 of the episode!

I don't remember that...but it wouldn't surprise me. Shinji represents the weakest and most insecure man that they could concieve; that he would trade in his gender identity for one that didn't focus on "manly" virtues would allow him to hide from his own sense of inadequecy.

Check out Fruits Basket; somewhere towards the end they introduce a character that dresses, acts, and emulates a woman because of a deeply held belief that he cannot measure up to the standards of behavior that males are held to.

This character reveals that he idolizes one of the loudest and most obnoxious members of the family, because of his utter confidence in himself.

I guess it speaks volumes about Japanese Gender roles; if you're not strong, secure, and thus "manly" you're weak, insecure and "womanish"

just to get slightly back on topic, I've never seen neon genesis, but one hears good things
