I almost had my own square, damn Calricstan.

I was really surprised that there are a similar number of libertarians to conservatives, something not reflected in reality.

I had to abbreviate a few names in order to accomodate them towards the bottom left.

It's really quite interesting, seems to prove a strong correlation between authoritarian/libertarian and economic left/right

Most of the useful information from the NS Political Compass can be divined from a visual examination of Swimmingpool’s chart (http://www.iol.ie/~roto/nspolc2.jpg) . However, for those that asked for numbers, here are some descriptive statistics. The sample is not a scientific one, so they should not be taken too seriously. They were derived in S-Plus 2000 (not the ideal Stats package, but the one I happen to have on my PC). A lot of this stuff I haven’t done since college, so apologies for any errors. I have used definitions as presented in the Political Compass website (http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/index.php) – there’s not any real alternative given that they operationalised the concepts under review.


Summary statistics

Count: 273

Averages:
Mean: economic: -1.85; social: -3.09
Median: economic: -3.13; social: 3.90
Modal rounded values: economic: -5; social: -6
Maximum: economic: 10; social: 8.97
Minimum: economic: -10; social: -9.64

Correlation: 0.54

From this we may deduce that the sample leans to the left in economics terms, and towards social libertarianism. Furthermore, there’s a full range of possible values, so we know the distribution is skewed. We might also tentatively suggest that extreme views in economics are more likely to be ideological; that is to say, more ready to accept absolutes.
There is a reasonable positive correlation observed between social and economic results, so we may conclude that those respondents on the left economically are more likely to be socially liberal.
No surprises so far.


Linear regression

If we fit a linear regression line to the result, we find a line defined by:

Economic score = 0.4 x Social score – 2.4, with R^2=0.3.

We can draw no conclusions about causation from this, but it may be of interest that, assuming both scales to be calibrated to a zero-mid point, respondents are likely to be disproportionately social liberal relative to their economic views.


Multi-Variate Analysis:

Variance in results: Using Principal Components Analysis, we find that 77% of the variance in the results could be explained by an (underlying) single dimension. This is interesting in the context of the website’s claim that a two-dimensional map is needed to explain political positions. These results suggest that the bulk of our results could in fact be plotted on a more traditional, simple left/right axis.

Clusters: there are not really any easily identifiable clusters. However, if we use agglomerative hierarchical clustering, we can broadly identify five groups of respondents, identified below with the Political Compass’s analysis of international representatives and mean scores for the economic and social scales respectively:

Moderate left (The Pope): 34 members; -2.3, 1.0
Libertarian left (The Dalai Lama): 144 members; -5.9, -5.4
Libertarian right (Friedman): 38 members; 4.0; -5.5
Moderate right (Tony Blair): 50 members; 4.3, 1.2,
Authoritarian right (Maggie Thatcher): 7 members; 8.0; 7.2

Interestingly, although the other clusters come and go according to the clustering technique applied, the last cluster remains largely untouched by the choice of analysis or group number. They just don’t seem to want to join the rest of the group.
