So, the US has recalled Ambassador Scobey and is making demands of Syria.
So, what does this mean? Yadda yadda yadda.

Well ... guess that settles, once and for all, the "who's next" question.

I thought Iran was next.
Let's see. We took Afghanistan. That's to the north. We own Pakistan by proxy (well, sort of). That's to the south and east. And we took Iraq, which is to the west. So Iran is surrounded, or should feel like they are.
Of course, with the Palestinian-Israeli thing clunking along so far, I wouldn't want the Syrians or Hezbollah to interfere at this point. So maybe we pull out a large sledgehammer and bonk them on the head a few times to get the point across.

The United States announced Tuesday the recall of its ambassador to Syria in response to the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. from the report cited above.
Um what does the assasination of an ex Lebanese prime minister in Lebanon have to do with the USA?

Nah ... as I've said all along, Iran has too strong of a military. The US only attacks weaklings. Before we attack Iran, we have to convince Europe to put harsh sanctions in place that will depleat Iran within 4 years so Bush can go in before he has to leave office.
Unfortunately for that plan, Iran has a strong ally in China, so I don't see it happening any time soon.

We'll bomb Iran soon enough. I'd bet on it happening before this time next year. We won't invade, but we'll bomb their reactor and some military sites.

Possible ... although we may leave that to Israel.
WOAH!
Jeez, now we have to compile a whole probability report on a possible Syrian-US war.

I don't see China defending anyone in a military way anytime soon.
as for Iran, it is extremely possible to destroy their conventional armed forces in a short period of time, destroy their reactors, and do most of that from the air.
They don't have any ability to shoot down US aircraft, and neither does China. Or anyone else, for that matter.

It means yet another part of the world will be reduced to rubble, presumably.
Nice.

Not militarily, no, but they have the resources and alliances with Russia, et al, to make any European sanctions against Iran a joke.

Don't be so sure. Iran has a very capable and formidable Air Force, including a small fleet of F-14s and SU-25K Frogfoots with 80% mission capacity, and a wide range of ASMs and AAMs at their disposal. Not to mention a wide range of SAMs, including a couple hundred HAWK systems - which the US itself uses.
I wouldn't under estimate Iran.

None of their air defenses would last more than a few days against the US Air Force and US Navy.
Iraq had the most modern (short of the US), and most densely packed, air defense system in the world (outside of the dense setup outside of Hanoi in the Vietnam War).
It's not possible for Iran to defend itself against the US on any conventional level.

The guy who got assasinated was one of the most outspoken critics of the Syrian government's control over Lebanon. He was planning to run for office again. Syria doesn't want to lose control over their puppet, and used terrorists to solve their little problem (like they always do).
