Joan of Arc? What'd she do apart from being a stupid peasant girl? She didn't save France, she won a few minor battles, and everything she won was later given back to the English by the French king in order to have his throne recognized. She didn't lead France, basically she was just a psychotic religious zealot who got roasted. I know several French who hate her and think she shouldn't be worshipped...

Hero?

Any fireman, cop or paramedic who does his/her job.

She did what no french male could do as a leader. She gave them the will to fight. Just because another french "leader" later dumped what she accomplished is no fault of her own.

If the English had won the war, England and France would've become one country under an English king.

Anyway, my short list of POLITICAL heroes (since that seems to be what we're talking about here) includes:

Fidel Castro
Che Guevara
V.I. Lenin
Leon Trotsky
Karl Marx
Rosa Luxemburg
Jean-Paul Marat
George Washington
Rosa Parks
Jesus of Nazareth

And how are these people heroes (to pick a couple):

Margaret Sanger: supported racist forced sterilization of Blacks and Puerto Ricans--being therefore fundamentally opposed to reproductive choice; praised Nazi eugenics policies.

Franklin D. Roosevelt: ordered the imprisonment in concentration camps of tens of thousands of U.S. citizens of Japanese descent.

In the last few days, weirdly, I'd have to say Che Guevera. No, i'm not a communist (far from it in fact), and no, i'm not the sort of idiot that would wear a t-shirt or have a poster of that stoopid pop-art portrait of him, but what he did with his life was sort of interesting.

If not him, then maybe Friedrich Nietzsche. Though I'm not sure if I would exactly call him a hero.

Ramanujan most definitely. I think what he achieved without any outside intervention is absolutely incredible, and surpasses the mathematical achievements of Pythagoras, Euler and Newton by quite a margin. A pity such a fine mind should submit to British weather conditions after being used to his Indian climate.
For anyone interested I suggested reading 'the man who knew infinity'.

*Mohandas Gandhi (super calloused fragile mystic hexed with halitosis. No, seriously, complete respect)
*Sitting Bull (for having the courage to be the resistance)
*Bob Brown (Any Australians out there? I LOVE BOB BROWN)

Ramanujan is greater than Pythagoras but Euler and Newton were much greater mathematicians than Ramanujan.

Interesting...

"...Che Guevara was monumentally vain and epically stupid. He was shallow, boorish, cruel, and cowardly. He was a full of himself, a consummate fraud and an intellectual vacumn. He was intoxicated with a few vapid slogans, spoke in cliches and was a glutton for publicity. But ah!--he DID come out nice in a couple of publicity photos, high cheekbones and all! And we wonder why he's a hit in Hollywood?"

I knew that question would come. ;)
Like I said, I posted on the poll a few of the greats because I could only post ten.
I guess it is because it has allways taken a great person to stand up to the old English tyranny.
But hey if you other people have any English greats feel free to post them.

France: Our king did have a claim to the French throne, as strong as any other claimants.
Scotland: Edward I was probably a meddler in affairs which weren't anything to do with him, but the whole medieval history of these two countries is full of England invading Scotland, and vice versa. Ever heard of the Auld Alliance?
William Wallace is rubish, there were better soldiers than him furhter north.
Don't get me started on George Washington.

Like the abscence of any Englishmen especially considering that the President of the USA admires an Englishman above anyone else; Winston Churchill. But I guess that's because England has only ever been a nasty imperialist!

You can just go on and correct all spelling on this forum. People make mistakes.
I said in one post 'Old English Tyranny' as in not today. Read the posts.
I also said that all are welcome to post their own list and yes that means English heros too.

ATTENTION

There seems to be a few Englishmen that are hurt because there is no English hero on the list or that many on the list did fight England once.
English or not, you can post your own list of heros and if there are people that admire an English man/woman for something and wants to put his or her name on their list then please do so.

This is not an I Hate England thread.

The list you provided has many, many courageous and prominent people. I am not sure what criteria you're using, so it is difficult to select among them.

My personal choice, however, is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. He risked his life to help make life better for people---all people---in the southern sector of the United States, and made important personal sacrifices to bring real change about. In the end, the effort cost him his life. It's impossible to ignore the contribution he made, and even more difficult to dispute how those positive changes continue to impact American and worldwide relations.

Glad to hear it. I aint blindly thinking my country is perfect but to suggest that we have done no good for the world at all is very hurtful.

Ok here's a list of my heroes or people I admire in (shall mark the non-English ones):

Arthur Wellesley, The Duke of Wellington (Brilliant Commander);
Lord Admiral Viscount Horatio Nelson (The Napoleon of the seas);
Oliver Cromwell (Saved this country from despotism and anarchy and founded religious toleration in the English state);
Nicolo Machiavelli (no better book on realpolitik than "The Prince" exists);
King Henry II (the finest and yet most tragic monarch in this country's history. Betrayed by his over-glorified son Richard I, the Lionhearted);
Sir Winston Churchill (Provided the effective leadership this country needed to transform this country's darkest moments into it's finest hour);
Martin Luther King Jnr (Why do Americans shoot their best leaders like Lincoln also?);
