It really makes me angry that our school system is as long as it is.
Does any other country have a similar system as we do or is it just us?
Students here are really angry with this and think that we should shorten it by two years. What do you think?

What's the big deal? Two more years you don't have to become a productive member of society...

this was posed to me by an adult:

why are you so eager to get out of school? All that comes after that is work for the rest of your life. No more half days, no more full weekends off, no more winter, fall, or spring breaks, no more summer break.

Why are so eager to get out of school again?

Up to 16 years of age but if you do not go on to upper level you will have no chance of getting a good job. You will need to be in school to age 20-21 and get "Stúdentspróf". Then you can go to University or work.

I want to study what I really want to learn. The ministry tells you what to learn until you graduate at age 20-21.
We have 3 month long summer vacations, 21 days Christmas vacations and 14 days easter vacations and it takes to damn long to finish.

You need money to live here and we need to work to get it.
The faster we get to University the faster we graduate and the faster we get good jobs and can live well.

WTF? We used to go to school from 8:00am - 3:30pm, how can you get through the workloads with 1 3/4hrs less time each day? And then have half days??? I bet you never even had to go to school on Saturday!

Why?

Simply because it would have given me a chance to learn more and it would mean more maturity when people were at an age to attend university.

True, it is too late for me know I graduate next Christmas so I will not see the school year shortend but I think we are looking to Norway and seeing how they have their school system.
Our system will not change I think, atleast not in the near future.

Honestly, if you count college and grad school, your school system looks a lot like the US. My question, for all school systems, is that if we suddenly stopped making so many years compulsory, how long would it be until employers started to hire people who had only a few years of school but could still do the job? After all, a construction worker doesn't need Shakespeare, and a reporter doesn't need calculus. Why do we make them take it?

Why do we make them learn it? Supposedly, the Liberal Education - covering mathematics, history, english composition and literature, and the sciences as well as various lesser subjects such as language, psychology, philosophy and art/music/theater - provides the human mind with a well-rounded education that gives it the ability to think on very high levels, as well as a level of mental versatility that a focus on a certain profession or a lack of higher-level learning might not provide.

I'm not certain as to whether or not this is true. But it's the argument, or so I understand.

On another note... Pffft! It's Iceland! ... American hubris officially discharged.
