Jayastan

SO I am on msn and someone I have not talked to quite awhile sends me a message:

" hey man hows it going, long time no talk"

Me: "ya how you been"

other guy: " I jst got married! wanna see my pics!!"

Me: "i didnt know that, sure man!"

other guy " sure just go to this site, blah blah blah, then you have to go to the msn login screen, then u get to the picture site!"

Me: " geee coool! " (DUUUUH)

CAREFULL THE FOLLOWING LINK HAS A TROJAN
this is the site DO NOT POST LINKS TO TROJANS!!! <<<<< der thats not a msn log in stupid!

So i put in my hotmail password, then he starts laughing telling me he has my password. He could of course see my password, and as such booted me out of msn.

So who the fuck hacks msn? I just use that email address for crap. WTF???

You just got scammed by a phisher.
With the .NET passport becoming more popular, s/he can asume you identity in any case that requires a .NET passport. Of course, there aren't a great many of those of yet...

You went to a non-MSN site and plugged in your MSN password. The old bait -n- switch ... oldest trick in the book. You fell for it.

Very, very basic social engineering. It's the internet equivalent of "Look behind you!" *run away*

Yeah, but it only affects IE. Mozilla/Netscape users are safe. I checked the code ... it's hilarious. Someone ought to drop an email to and slap him around a little for such a lame attempt at "'1337 ski11z".

Not just MSN, your .NET passport. At the moment, it is fairly useless. But in theory, the .NET passport seems to have been targetted to be more all-encompassing, and if it were so and you did the same thing, bad things could happen.

Of course, I have no idea why the hell I'm wandering off on this hypothetical tangent...

Well, that's all you really can do at this point. Some tips for the future (not being rude, just bein' helpful):

1] Don't use IE. Download Mozilla Firefox or Opera.
2] Make your machine a dual-boot Windows XP / Linux. That way, if your Windows side gets virused, you can still have access to your machine and rid yourself of the evil monkeys. If you're unfamiliar with Linux, fear not, most versions now have an interface as easy as Windows. (I suggest Fedora Core 3)
3] If someone you know sends you to a site to show you some pictures that asks for your password, ask the person to move the pictures to a public server. If they won't, then just explain that while you imagine the pics are lovely, you're not comfortable using your passport password on a non-MS certified site.
4] Don't use Windows XP firewall. It's about as useful as throwing a cup of water at the Sun. Grab AVG 7.0 and spend a little $$ and also install Norton Internet Security. You'll be practically invulnerable to attack and neither program uses many resources - avoid McCaffee like the plague.
5] Don't use MSN messenger or AIM. Yahoo has a pretty secure messenger and ICQ, while bulky, is still reasonable.

I doubt highly that it was his friend. Chances are likely that his friend got hit by the same thing and, in turn, the people on his buddy list were phished. Probably a chain of this going back 50+ users to find the source.

Jaystan - if you have anything financial tied to that account, or might have had any email confirmations for other accounts in your inbox - you might want to see about notifying and/or cancelling those accounts.

Especially if you are one of those who use the same password in multiple places, like - say - a paypal account tied to that email.....

Jeez and they say Americans are stupid...

Just kidding, everyone will get scammed once in there life, whether it will be that obvious Im not sure. Once in Italy a guy tried to sell me some weird little trinket (BTW the guy was a gypsy) and as I walked away the thing broke right in my hand! I walked back over to the guy demanded my money back and when he didnt give it I said, ok, walked about 10 yards away than chucked the thing at him, hit him right in his little brown skull, I laughed so hard, that was worth 2.50 Euros.

It than landed in the trevi fountain and I was fined 15 Euros for littering.

I had till the end of the month to pay it, so I just went back to America in two weeks and they are probably hunting me down as we speak!

I only go to links provided by people I trust.

That's the point. This person appeared to be someone Jayastan knew, because he'd already phished Jayastan's friend.
