Who had (or has) the biggest personality cult in history?

I'd say either Rafael Trujillo or Saparmurat Niyazov. As always, the poll will be up in a minute.

I considered putting him on the poll, but for personal reasons (and because then I'd have to include all other major religious leaders) I decided not to.

No worries. I have no problem naming him.

Jesus only had about a hundred thousand followers.

People who love you after your dead don't count, either.

Ghengis Khan or Attila the Hun

No, no.

People respected them, but almost no one loved them.

If your going to go that far back, the best example would be Julius Ceaser.

Another reason I didn't include Jesus, Mohammed, et. al., is because they didn't intend to establish personality cults. People like Trujillo or Niyazov, for example, who name practically their whole damn countries after themselves, did.

Stalin's wasn't all that. It was just a fear climate. He was the original personality cult guy, but Mao dwarf's everyone.

I mean, the people practivally policed themselves, and even when everything was coming down they loved him, plus it lasted his whole reign, and further, not to mention it was the largest one in the entire world's history.

Personality cult does not imply love, it can be based on fear or respect.
If it had to be love how did the likes of Stalin make the poll.

JC was not exactly loved either. (oops JC being Julius Ceaser, not Jesus Christ)

I dispute that many people loved Stalin. Lenin yes, but not Stalin. They feared him, they obeyed him, they worshiped him, but they did not love him.

And yes, just like I said, not many people loved Stalin, he knew it, and they knew it.

Nagoragakok, or whoever you were talking about, yes, indeed he did have a nice one, but what about sieze? Did he rule China? No, he did not.

And Julius Ceaser not loved? What the hell are you talking about? They fucking kissed the ground on which he walked!

He was everything they loved (and consequently, they loved him immensly)

The guy was a brilliant and succesfull general, gave huge fucking festivals, stood up for them, and was very charismatic in the process.

If they didn't like him, what did they elect him to so many posts, eh?

No, they did love him.

And Mao is by far the best.

Consider who could vote. The senate, that was all. Look at the family relationships within the senate. Oh what a surprise they voted for him, and then murdered him. A real love hate relationship.
How did Julius Ceaser obtain power in Rome? Well he marched into rome at the head of his particular portion of the roman army and seized power. Crossing the rubicon and all that. A highly loved man this one.

Definitely not Mao. Before the 1970s the Chinese people liked Mao but he was not an object of worship. The leadership of the Chinese nation was divided amongst other charismatic figures including Lin Biao and Liu Shaoqi. An effort to create a true one-man cult of personality did not really begin until the 1970s when all of Mao's rivals were eliminated, and by then the ordinary CHinese people were tired of Mao. In this poll I voted for Kim Jong Il.

That's a very, very odd reading of Chinese history. The Cultural Revolution wasn't the beginning of Mao's personality cult, and it started in about 1966. And in the late 60s Mao was an object of extreme reverence. I know of people who pinned their Mao badges to their skin to show their love for him. And they used the word "love" themselves. Mao was the deliverer of a huge number of chinese peasants who had lived all their lives in poverty and fear of their lives until he came along. They loved him in a very superstitious way. They were superstitious people, and treated him as a god.
