Ladyhawke

Perhaps the best fantasy movie ever conceived. A superb cast, a brilliant story. A hawk and a wolf, representing the feminine and masculine archetypes, a magical relationship and a mystical curse.

Is there anyone else who thinks this movie is epiphanous?

Funny, that's almost the same thing I thought when I saw the commercials for 'White Chicks'.

I'm not even convinced that epiphanous is a word, my opinion as to whether or not any movie (or Ladyhawk in particular) is epiphanous would be entirely contingent on the meaning of epiphanous.

Actually, it took place in France, but I never let accents bother me in a *fantasy* movie. :-)

I didn't think it was too great, the plot and the cast were stereotyped and the permantant use of the misty lens filter was incredibly annoying...it would have to be one of the worst movies I partially saw...that's just my personal opinion.

Golly! I'm watching it right now, and I see no misty lens at all... but maybe that's just me.

well since an epiphany can be the manifestation of a god or other supernatural creature, and since each character underwhen a supernatural transformation at sunrise and sunset. i guess the movie does fit into the technical definition of epiphanous. i'm not sure if the same could be said about white chicks since the gender and racial transformation is not supernatural in nature.

I love this scene, 90 minutes into the movie. Navarre has just awakened to see Isabeau, for the first time in years, because of the sunlight reflected off the sword. The moment when they see each other gives her such hope, and him, pessimistically, such gloom.

My main complaint about the film is that the characters carry swords throughout it, yet never actually stab anyone with them. I believe one person does so accidentally and one other person dies from a sword, but for the most part the fighting is just silly.

"..of, or having the quality of, an epiphany."
In that case, I dont consider that Ladyhawk is of or has the quality of an epiphany, in fact aside from yourself I know of no one who considers the movie to be a manifestation of God or any superhuman being, nor do I know anyone who considers it to be a revealation of God or any superhuman being, or even of having any particular revelatory qualities.

So I'd have to say that it isnt a movie that appears to have the quality of an epiphany generally (so far as I can ascertain), although that doesnt mean it wont have the quality of an epiphany so far as any individual person is concerned....apparently revealation comes in many shapes and forms. ;)

There is nothing that happens in this world that is not "so far as any individual person is concerned." ;)

I liked it. Then again, I'm a sucker for misty, mystical fantasy movies. And when Rutger Hauer was younger, I kind of had a thing for him. Especially in Bladerunner. Mmmm.

I really like this movie. Is it supposed to be somewhere in France?
That castle is somewhere in Italy, my parents were ther on vacation and sent me some pictures of it. (But I can't remember exactly where it was.)

I can see how someone could like this movie, it is highly romantasized and not a little mellodramatic (maybe a lot) but so is the genre, really.

For the fighting, it's not that kind of movie. Fighting would be way out of place.

The setting is a fantasy world of magic and curses, and even then the language they speak wouldn't be recognizable by anyone other than linguists. So we can make the leap of assumption that they are speaking lines that have been 'translated' and the individual accents become affectatious and are sillier than when someone speaks with, say, a russian accent to 'indicate' he is speaking russian in reality. It makes it sound like they are talking in english in the narrative for our sakes. (The camera is there, speak english for the audience...)

I'm suprised no one has forwarded the notion that even if you like the film, there are still three Lord of the Rings movies, Willow, Conan movies, Krull, Beastmaster, etc. I'm not saying they are all better, but at least with some mentioned a pretty good case could be made that they are.

Rutger Howeveryouspellhislastname is the evil ninja master of playing emotionally wounded, baggage carrying badass.

IIRC (it's been a few years), there's plenty of fighting. There is even a reasonable amount of killing. Just not with the swords they use throughout the film.

It is a well-constructed film though. I rate it higher than all the ones you list bar LoTR.

It's been a while for me. Don't some people get it with a crossbow? C'mon, people-crossbow! What more do you want?

But surely Sword and the Sorceress..........

Kidding, kidding....

"If I Recall Correctly"

I know someone gets stabbed by an arrow. That worked for me.

And it would be inconceivable to have a discussion about fantasy without The Princess Bride.

I would rate it as "quite a lot" of fighting, but it's used to carry the story forward.

*pees with excitement*

Ladyhawke and Willow are two of my very favorites.

The scene at the end with Isabeau and the Bishop in the Cathedral, standing at the altar, and Navarre busts through the cathedral door on his horse and comes galloping in...

Ok, I need to settle down.

Don't settle down. It's Valentine's Day, a day to glorify romance.

Ladyhawke is good fare. Better than Krull. I mean seriously, wtf was up with Krull? Aliens with magical shooty-thingies? Plus, they couldn't even hit any of their targets, making them no better than an average Stormtrooper.

That's still my favorite scene, and I've always dreamed of riding a horse into a huge cathedral and kicking around some clergy. :p

Ladyhawke is by far one of my favorite movies ever---I actually even prefer it to Lord of the Rings...[gasp...cringes in fear waiting for the lightning bolt to strike].
I also had a thing for Rutger Hauer when he was younger, and I think he is a very underrated actor. Is this the only movie he ever played in as a good guy?

There was one anti-hero type character, in a movie about a blood sport (vaguely remember it).

EDIT: The Blood of Heros, that was it! Thank you IMDB.

Rutger Hauer was the good guy in Jugger, in Sobibor, and in his early days in some cheap porn movies.
Still an actor I really like to see in most of his movies (like Bladerunner).

While I never had a crush on Rutger Hauer, he is probably one of the finest actors on Earth, and hopelessly underrated. He stole the show in Blade Runner, and that puts him one up on Harrison Ford, for Christ sakes.
