DANES.
People from Denmark ONLY! Please do not post here if you are not Danish.

Okay, let's try this for the third time. Are any Danes here?

I am looking for a Dane or Danes that know their history well and want to talk about the Icelandic-Denmark issue. Kalmar Union, 19th Century, 1918 and 1944 etc. I'm Icelandic.

Im Icelandic and we are probably born with hate for Denmark. I could not care less for that sorry nation but I am interested to hear what they have to say on the issue.

The Danes do not seem to be on this forum or they do not want to reply to this thread.
But a Swede are you, I go there often to place named 'Lund', nice country and polite people. You get a culture shock just driveing over the bridge the Danes and Swedes are so differant.

:D Indeed... but then, it's not so hard as their language makes them sound like they have a permanent sore throat! :p

There don't seem to be very many Danes about on here.

I started a topic on the Danish election results on Tuesday, and whilst some other Swedes and a Finn (as well as a couple of Americans) joined in, no Danes appeared! So, North Island, you may not find any.

Why do people hate eachother? What does that bring us? As an American myself, I'm pissed at the way France talked to the US during the Iraq war. But, I don't hate him. I can't hate Russians because of Stalin. I can't hate all Germans because of Hitler either. Swedes, and Icyies, what did Denmark do to you? Danes, what did the Swedes and Icyies do to you? I can't think of anything...

I never heard Danish or Swedish spoken, so I don't know. I always thought they were very closley related, though..

The Danes pay the Icelandic government for keeping Danish in the schools. Nobody understands it here and if we were to go to Denmark and speak Danish they would not understand us and we would not understand them, we understnad Norwegian better.
An Icelander can study Swedish or Norwegian instead if they demand to do so and many do, some out of patriotism (refuse to learn the tyrants language) and others out of interest in another language. I learned Norwegian myself, after all we are of the Norse people.

What is an Icie? If you are talking about an Icelander say Icelander not Icie. We are friends with our brothers in Norway, good stong friends of Sweden and friends with Finland. Do not start something you do not understand.
The Danes are tyrants and allways have been. They ruled here for centurys and did nothing for us. My people lived in poverty and sickness, slaving for Denamarks wealth. I can tell you the story and then you would understand.

That's interesting. Didn't realise Denmark subsidised Danish lanaguage in your schools. Although I can understand both Danish and Norwegian, I find that I can understand Norwegian with more ease.

Well, Denmark occupied and ruled their countries for several centuries. Then Sweden became independent and took Norway with it. Then Sweden took over Finland. For the same reason Finns and Norwegians don't like Sweden. I agree that it's stupid to hate a country that occupied yours before most people alive now were born, but hey, we're talking about humans here.

Only two things are infinite; the universe and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe.

I think it's a bit strong to rank the Norwegian and Finnish antagonism towards Sweden at the same level of Island-Denmark.

Sure, there is a friendly rivalry between Norway and Sweden. And with the Finns maybe something a little stronger (although, sometimes I wonder how much this is a natural extension/reflection of the internal situation between the Finnish and minority Swedish speakers in Finland). But, we are all still close friends in values. Also with Denmark and also with Iceland.

It's not very politically correct, but we have a joke in Swedish that you may like, it says "Danish is not so much a language but a throat infection" or something like that.

So, if you can speak Norwegian, you must be able to understand Swedish anyway pretty well? And also Danish to a large extent.

The feeling is mutual. The Danes hate us too. It really depends on how you look at it. The English ruled Éire with an iron fist and it is good that you do not hate them. Like I said I do not hate them, I just do not like them but many here have a hate for that nation and have a right to do so.
We can trace our roots back over a thousand years and the sagas tell tales of what they did to our people and in more recent history they ruled here with no regard for us just what they wanted.

Interesting you don't understand any Danish then, the sydsvenska dialect in Skåne is the most close to Danish of any Swedish dialect. In fact the reason it is so like Danish is that it's evolution has kind of been from a fusion of the eastern Danish dialect with Swedish back in the past.

Their language is more distinct from the other Scandinavian languages (by which I mean Swedish, Norwegian and Danish). As a Swede, I can understand Norwegian and Danish, but not Icelandic. It's the same language group though, Icelandic is much much much closer to the original Norse spoken by the Vikings... in fact, to the extent an Icelandic speaker can read the sagas without any difficulty.

Their culture is certainly not Danish, it's Icelandic.
