Thousands of years of evolution, and now we have the internet

Post what you have to say to represent this brief moment of time in Earth's history, to represent *BLANK NUMBER* of years of Homo Sapien evolution (might be a bit off), to represent the early 21st century...to represent MANKIND!

Three to four thousand? I'm sure Mr. Jillete would disagree. He's good for spotting bullshit.

Well, I would have to say that the best description would be Holocene, seeing as that is the epoch of the last 11000 years. In fact, it is sometimes referred to as Anthropogene, even though Homo sapiens sapiens has been predicted have been in existence for 90000 years. It wasn't until about 40000 years ago that Homo sapiens sapiens emmigrated from Africe.

That reminds me, proper Linnaean taxonomy is to capitalise the intial of the genus and leave the rest lowercase, as well as italicise or underline the Latin name. Not to mention that there is no "sapien", only sapiens.

I think I agree with him.

There was that guy that said that a million monkeys on a million typewriters would eventually produce the combined works of Shakespeare.

Then later, some other guy said that thanks to the Internet, we now know that's not true.

Actually some people believe Australia was populated by about 50,000 years BP.

When you consider what comprises so-called 'normal' behavior for humans, it's amazing we still exist. Be grateful that your bloodline made it as far as it has and stop moaning over stupid shit.

The internet has it's faults, true...but it has opened the door for international communication between even the lowest levels of most nations, which eventually is likely to lead to understanding and just maybe, in another 70 or 80 years, world peace as the global populations get fed up with the crap we have now.

I doubt it...he's just stupid. Let's go, folks. This person is apparently not the brightest bulb on the shelf and frankly I'd really rather have a convo with someone with a higher IQ than a shrub.

You know, if you keep your bulbs on a shelf that might explain why they aren't that bright. Try screwing them into a fixture.

It helps.

No, not really. Intraspecies competition and predation are really not large factors of death in anything. It is parasites and diseases that are the real killers of organisms. During the 4 years of WWI, about 25 million people were killed. It took 4 months for the succeeding flu pandemic to do the same.

Did you miss the bit about 'understanding'? :Raps your knuckles with a ruler, HARD: Pay attention, boy! Damn, you almost HAVE to be male...and BTW, I'm actually a 41-year-old female. Don't assume that a user name is what it seems.

I say hallelujah. Let the ones who want to stay under rocks, stay under rocks. Let the ones who understand their loneliness and the human condition rejoice and appreciate one of the many beautiful forum there have come to be and feel no fault shame or guilt for it, as it seems to be one of the best things we can do. Let also the ones who think it's just another proficient way for perverse pervasion consider a moment that no one has to take ANYONE ELSE seriously at all. It's still your choice. You can put down the remote. You can go and live. All consequential of course but at least you CAN.

I think that all those years of evolution to end up where we are now with war, slavery, genocides, starvation, exploitation, crime...the list goes on. True its not recent at all, its been going on for hundreds if not thousands of years... Fellow humans, hear me now, the history of humanity is a horror story. And all those of you who say we are better now than before, look around, look at everywhere in the world, and that little fairy world in which you live will soon fall to ashes... So my comment on humanity....really, really depressing, I feel that our World will end up like in 1984, which is even more depressing. Thats humanity for you, one big horrible story from which we don't learn anything, we prefer to simply forget it.

Could you explain what they hell you're talking about? Allow me to quote The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature by Matt Ridley.

The "great war" of 1914-18 killed 25 million in four years. The influenza epidemic that followed killed 25 million people in four months. It was merely the latest in a series of devastating plagues to hit the human species after the dawn of civilization. Europe was laid to waste by measles after A.D. 165, by smallpox after A.D. 251, by bubonic plague after 1348, by syphilis after 1492, and by tuberculosis after 1800.
I'm not trying to say that WWI wasn't horrible in its own right, but humans killing each other isn't even comparable in mortality compared to disease.

Gosh.

You're right. I am humbled to find myself in the presence of one who has the intellectual capacity to use such witty terms as "stupid", "not the brightest bulb on the shelf", "someone with a higher IQ [no] than a shrub" when refering to others.

I bow to your remarkable grasp of the language, and your ability to convey your thoughts in an adult and thought-provoking manner.
