My dad was in the army, because there was forced conscription. When he was on Sentry duty, he would climb on a roof, and sleep. When he got relieved, he'd climb into his cot and sleep some more.

Not sure, but it sounds like how my dad described bring on guard duty in Korea, where the prisoners and everyone else knew the guards carried unloaded rifles. Whenever a prisoner threatened to escape, he'd just point to the dobermans walking the perimeter, rather than denying that the guards were unarmed, and no one ever attempted it.
