A plan by a German zoo to test the sexual appetites of a group of suspected homosexual penguins has sparked outrage among gay and lesbian groups, who fear zookeepers might force them to turn straight.

"All sorts of gay and lesbian associations have been e-mailing and calling in to protest," said a spokesman for the zoo in the northwestern city of Bremerhaven on Friday.

He said the zoo concluded the penguins might be gay after seeing male penguins trying to mate with other males and trying to hatch offspring out of stones.

German media reported that female Swedish penguins would be brought to the zoo to test the theory, but when word got out about the plan, the phones started ringing.

"Nobody here is trying to break-up same sex pairs by force," the zoo's director Heike Kueck told public broadcaster NDR. "We don't know if the three male pairs are really gay or just got together because of a lack of females."

There are quite a number of examples of animals that engage in regular acts of homosexuality. Does this observation translate into natural behaviour for humans? That's the point which the religious web sites I just found attack.

Call me crazy, but I think a penguin should be able to fuck whoever or whatever they want to fuck. And if they want to hatch a rock, more power to them.

No, it isnt. God gave penguins free will and every non-flying fowl that looks like a waiter should have the possibility to explore the full gamut of sexuality. Although it would be slanted if they include a full-fledged candlelight dinner with the ladies and just frozen fish when they are with the guys.

i myself believe that homosexuality is as natural as bi and hetero sexuality

but I think those gay rights activists are going a bit too far thinkign that its not okay to see if these penguins might be attracted to teh opposite sex as well.

I agree. If they are gay, then they will stay away from the female penguins. Too me it sounds like they are showing homosexual activity because there are no females around. If kept up, they might eventually evolve over time so they no longer need both genders. It also sounds like the gay rights groups are forcing the penguins to be gay and not giving them the choice. Who is restricting rights?

A massively loaded question to which the answer is clearly no, but which doesn't necessarily address the matter in hand.

I think it is a good idea for those swedish penguins to arrive. i don't think the penguins are desperate, I think they are really horny and are desperate to have kids, I think women will be able to help.
