Hell, the Columbian drug cartels are moving more and more of their operations to Venezuela. Maybe Chavez wants weapons to get tough on them. Maybe not. Maybe he's planning to help FARC and their drug dealing allies against Columbia. I don't trust that Fuck.

So let me see if I have this straight: When the US takes steps to prevent a possible war from starting, you get as upset as when the US intervenes in an effort to prevent terrorism? I strongly suspect that either you're just anti-American, or that your elevator no longer reaches the upper floors!

Countries no longer only look out for their own self intrests, although it is still their main priority. Otherwise there would be no such think as the Kyoto agreement for example, and countries would not supply aid.

I think they're more worried about President Putin then Chavez. Russia, though stagnent for years is emerging again as a military and political contender, considering the state department did this the last time Russia sold weapons, this may be a growing pattern.

Yeah, real nice government. No freedom of the press, property seized from citizens and redistributed to buy votes, doctors and lawyers working as street vendors because they can't make any money at their chosen professions. Chavez is a real prince.

Property in some poorer countries is not the same as in the US, huge tracts of land belonging solely to the wealthy and the poorer people living on nothing. i'd vote for his ass too if he was doing that and i wasnt some rich jackass. why cant doctors and lawyers make any money and how is that chavez's fault?
Although I think we could all agree that the Venezuelan threat is pretty harmless compared to, say, North Korea or Pakistan. Some guns, some helicopters (you don't have those yet?), so what?
The real threat here is Russia's status as the global military Wal Mart.

I don't consider the Russians selling weapons to be a big deal, and I doubt it's the US Gov't reason for complaint in this matter. Russian military spending has been poor since 1990, really. Today, they and China *together* are only 27% of what the US spends on the military. And I doubt Russia is selling the Venezuelans the new stuff.
No, I rather see this as a backing of the Monroe Doctrine (the US doesn't like anybody in it's backyard. Look how Cuba has fared. Ditto Nicaragua.)
Columbia is maybe two steps ahead of Civil War at this point. :(

It's quite simple, ever since Chavez got elected, the US have been against any move he made, good or bad. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised that the US would object if Chavez annouced he would resign.
This situation is about the struggle between USA and Russia to dominate the global arms market, which didn't end with the cold war. Of course the USA is in the lead, which is a large part of the reason we Americans have so much nice stuff. It is ridiculous for any American to criticize another country's human rights record while USA doesn't guarantee something as basic as a right to shelter. It is ridiculous for any American to criticize another country's level of democracy while several of the most powerful positions in the US government are unelected. It is ridiculous for any American to criticize another government's sale of weapons to a foreign country considering USA's record of selling arms to brutal regimes. This criticism from the US government is economic strongholding, pure and simple.

Taxation and efforts to redistribute income. He's driving out businesses. He's also squandering the money from oil exports. When the oil runs out Venezuela is going to be one of the poorest countries in the world.

What by spending it on educational and health programmes for the poor?
Actually, I believe US oil is due to run out long before Venezuela's, which might explian why the US has such an interest in installing a new tinpot dictator whose only job is to say 'yes sir'.

Wasn't there a failed coup in Venezuela in April 2002? (Documentary- The Revolution Will Not Be Televised). President Hugo Chavez blamed the American government for the architect and the support of the failed coup. Therefore, buying armaments from other countries other than America may be the natural reaction of a suspicious government in Venezuela.
Some people will never be happy no matter what country X does, so it is best to ignore them.

that really doesnt answer the question. why cant doctors and lawyers make any money. we have plenty of taxes here, and redistribution of wealth would allow MORE people to pay them. try explaining

He's taking the redistribution of income to such an extreme that it's driving the rich and middle class out of the country. People who used to have high paying professional jobs do better by selling stuff and not paying taxes on the profits than in their skilled trades. It's a recipie for economic disaster.
I'm totally in favor of paying the poor a living wage and taxing the rich at a higher rate. I just don't think you should torpedo your economy in the process.

So? Venezuela is a democracy. If you don't like Chávez, he only has four more years (unless he's reelected) then you can vote him out. I assume you're Venezuelan because people from the US are always telling us "if you're not Amurrican shut up!" so I'm pretty sure they would be opining about the internal affairs of other countries.
I don't agree with many of Chávez's policies. But he has survived eight referenda. Referenda that, by the way, are possible thanks to the Consitution that he promoted.
