I was recently fired from my Marketing Consultancy (I really don't know what that means either) job and will be applying for unemployment benifits whilst I search for work. (I already have four interveiws, I'm no slouch)

But something that disturbed me is that I'll be receiving each fortnight a check equal to what I paid in tax every two weeks.

ERGO I'M GETTING MY MONEY BACK!!!
Take that federal government!

Hahah! Well, at least now you know that you should at least get a job that pays more than unemployment benefits after taxes. :)

Mmmmm....k. Except the point is the amount I paid in taxes is the same as the unemployment benifits. Generally leading one to assume I was making an alright salary, or getting scammed on tax.

All right that wasn't clear.

What I was trying to say was:

Isn't most of the money deducted from your paycheck deducted for Social Security and Medicare rather than Unemployment?

I thought the amount deducted for unemployment was relatively small.

Actually, you don't even see it. It's from the bit paid for by the employer.

It probally is, but isn't it disturbing now the less? Namely since unemployment is less then my rent.

Coincidence. And you won't be getting any unemployment insuance payments if the company decides to contest it, not if you live in the US that is.

they can only contest it for cause. if he was just laid off for re-organization/financial reasons they can't contest it.

Well, it worked out well, didn't it? Your tax was like money in the bank saved for a rainy day.

Here's how the tax thing works in the US. Your payroll deductions include Federal Withholding. That's the tax amount paid that you file your tax return on. You also have deductions for Social Security (FICA) and Medicare. Your employer matches your contributions to these funds and they are deposited for future  Social Security and Medicare benefits. Your employer also pays Federal Unemployment (FUTA) and State Unemployment (SUTA). This tax is a % of gross wages (less any cafeteria plans) based on previous unemployment claims against your employer. If they have a high lay-off or termination record they pay a higher % tax. Nothing is withheld from your income for unemployment taxes as it is soley your employer's responsibility. You will also have deductions on your check for State Withholding and City Withholding (where applicable). Hope this helps explain the various payroll taxes and who is responsible for them. ;)

I might also add that unemployment benefit amounts vary from state to state. Here in Arkansas I believe the max weekly benefit is $333.

Well, you do pay for it in a sense. When employers set up their budgets, the payroll portion of the budget is determine by what is called "weighted salaries". Weighted salaries include not only the actual wage paid, but all employer contributions (Futa, SUTA, FICA, Medicare, employer insurance contribution, etc.).

Have I bored you all sufficiently yet?

He said he was fired. That usually means that he was dismissed by the organization for a reason they ( at least ) felt was valid. If they contest award of unemployment compensation, the administrative law judge will decide.

Good morning!! You must not sleep much. As for the unemployment regulations, there are a limited number of reasons that an employer can legitimately dismiss you. It is also up to the employer to document and prove that you are in violation and that you were made aware that such actions are in violation of the employment agreement.

Yes. I use to be the Personnel Manager for a major Exxon affiliate as well as several smaller companies. One of the less attractive things I did was contest the award of unemployment compensation in cases where the employee was fired for cause. If it tells you anything, I lost one case out of about 100. :(

That's one reason I'm glad I'm no longer in personnel. I felt not unlike a whore. :(

BTW ... how do you know I don't get much sleep if you don't get much sleep either? ;)

I did pretty good. I got almost 8 hours, which is good for me. I've never been much for sleeping...feel like I'm missing out on something. I seem to function well on 5-6 hours.

Ditto. I have noticed that as I get older, I seem to be needing a bit more sleep, but not significantly. I suspect that if I quit drinking cofffeeee I would sleep much more soundly. Just love the damned stuff too much to quit entirely, although I do limit myself to only two cups in the morning.

BTW ... they've discovered coffee tends to make you have kidney stones! ICK!

But just think of all the dreams you're missing out on. Dreams rock!

Coffee on the otherhand, the smell alone makes my stomach churn, couldn't imagine ever drinking the stuff...

I've found as I get older that the longer I stay in bed the more aches I have when I get up...if I can get up. Old age is not for sissies.

I drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning, any more than that and I'm jittery. The rest of the day it's juice, decaf tea, and decaf diet coke.

Let me stress again....OLD AGE IS NOT FOR SISSIES!!

Amen. The old man wakes up in the morning, reaches over, and touches his wife's arm. She yells at him, "Don't touch me I'm dead."

"How do you know your are dead?” says the old man.

"Because I don't hurt,” say his wife.

Neither do I! Though that may have alot to do with why I'm now unemploymed!

For the record I had my "employment terminated" because "your division is not profitable". I feel warm inside knowing that I was sacked because the only thing the company did, isn't profitable.
