EDIT: HOME EDITION WORKS TOO! I just found this out.

Alright, there's something wrong with my explorer.exe file. Probably. At least it seems that way.

Anyway, my computer was recovering from a fit of viruses, and apparently one changed the code in the explorer.exe file. Glee. So that's where you all come in.

If you own Windows XP Professional Edition (I know it sucks, but that's besides the point), you can earn a virtual cookie by e-mailing your explorer.exe file attached to an e-mail to the following e-mail account:
wetsail@gmail.com
Put "Saving Resi!" in the title, so as to keep it from being stuffed as spam.

Oh, and viruses will be spat upon, and the sender damned to hell. So don't do that.

~ Bob (the guy that plays Resi)

P.S.: In addition to the cookie, the sender of the exe will also get a G-mail invite. Through some glitch I have 50 of the things...

Not a glich, they finally broke and started handing them out in rediculous numbers since everyone wanted an account. I've got about 27 running now to "farm" up invites just in case there is someone around who is actually still willing to pay for them.

I just wanted to say that, I've got home edition so I can't help you there. Gl though.

Heh... I've got three invite farms, and I doubt I'll run into anyone like that these days.

People who payed money on eBay when they first came out must really be kicking themselves now. :p

I got 50 cents of pocket change for one, but that's it.

Resi, do you have a recovery disk or a partition on your diskdrive that has the recovery software on it? If so, use that. It is not wise to just copy such a necessary files as explorer.exe from another source. Of course, you could always use another shell program.

System restoring isn't an option for me, for several reasons. First among them is that I don't want to re-update my regestry, second being that I'm not sure I even have a viable restore point as I've had system restore turned off until about a month ago, just about when the viruses started.

I'm not sure if this file will help, but my XP computer has only an iexplore.exe file, not explorer.exe. Shall I send this so you can try it?

If you didn't have explorer.exe, your computer wouldn't be running.

I've run a search on every item in my computer. There are explorer files, but none with the .exe suffix. And yes, I thought it was a fairly important file, as well. Which is why I started going through my folders one by one. There is no explorer.exe file.

How profoundly odd...

Heh, I'm not surprised to have a freak computer. Thing's been crashed, restored, attacked, killed, patched, etc. so many times in the one year since it was purchased, it's lucky to still function at all.

I suggest backing up everything and performing a fresh install of the operating system, its good for the system. Or just install linux and be done with it. :)

Hmm... My computer has also been taken over by an evil force. Even though I only use Firefox, Internet explorer keeps opening spontaneously to ad pages. I downloaded anti ad-ware programs like spybot and ad-aware but they cannot exorcise these demons. Perhaps my explore.exe file has been changed as well? Is there an easy way to fix such a problems in a way which can be explained in layman's terms ?

The only one I've ever found is reformatting your hard drive, and that's not a good idea.

Personally, I just live with the viruses, since I've never had an antivirus program work correctly for me.

it would most likely be a hidden system file

If only was there someway to figure out who actually created the viruses infecting your computer so you could track them down and beat them senseless Jay and Silent Bob strike back style.

File sent. I hope it helps.

Suggestion for future: Set up a Linux dual-boot. You'll be glad you did.
