What is your favourite non home country?

I got this idea from the quote about France "Every man loves two countries, his own and France". So what country besides your own do you love/like/have respect for/enjoy visiting etc and why?

I have respect for too many countries to list. One of them is even a muslim country. Anybody care to guess which one?

Hmmm....

I'd like to visit New Zealand and Australia and Norway and Russia and Mongolia and Tibet and Ireland and oh so many others. I don't think I really have a favourite 'other' country.

Not Saudia Arabia surely. Possibly Iraq now they are democratic (I want no sinde comments about that remark) maybe the Leabonon (I dont know if that is Muslim) or possibly Palistine (seeing as they have just signed a cease fire). Ok tell us

I've only visited two other countries, Spain and Germany. Spain is way too hot for my liking. But Germany was cool, the people there were really nice and helpful, good landscape too.

Croatia, my wife's home country. It is beautiful with mountains, seaside, numerous islands, unusual geographic anomalies and friendly people. I also very much enjoyed South Africa and Mozambique for their rugged landscape, wildlife and friendly people.

Indonesia. I studied Pentjak Silat very briefly with three members of the Suwanda family from West Java. Nicest people you could ever want to meet. And it's got a really interesting history and culture. Actually several cultures.

my two other favourite countries are Russia and Japan.

Wow, what a contrast. I have been to both and it is hard to imagine a person who would like one also being drawn to the other.

Japan is clean, orderly, obsessive about following formal rules of social ettiquette. The people go out of their way to accomodate and are painfully polite.

Russia is dirty, chaotic, with every social situation a sort of free for all (there is no such thing as waiting your turn in Russia). In public people are sullen and mistrustful, brusk to the point of rudeness (however, once you get into a Russian's home they are the most warm hearted giving people you could hope to find).

Each was a real experience for me, but I can't image two more different countries.

Spain-- but specifically Catalonia, I would love to have a house near or in Barcelona - great city.

Estonia - love Tallinn, lived there for a while whilst posted there.

Italy - for the simple fact that Italians know how life should be lived - friends, family, good food, good wine, slow pace... not too much work!

Finland - Lake District is great.

Lake district? 50% of the country? :)

And psst, Borgoa, Sweden isn't one of the countries I have lived in... but do you reckon a Finn could get away with our... 'dialect'? I have found I'm smiled at (at the least) in Stchlm when i open my mouth.

It's because I don't have a preference for any single culture, but rather humanity as a whole. Such a contrast is very appealing to me. I like to experience as much of humanities culture as I can. I forgot to mention Italy as well, see.

LOL.. yeah, lakeland really... Stunning in the summer.

As for the wonderful eastern Swedish or finlandssvenska or whatever... I'm not sure you could carry it off unnoticed... it's a little "different" to say the least... although I found out what kiva meant the other day, so my understanding has increased by 50%! You could get away with it certainly, especially after a while... just think you could be Danish... how does the expression go.. "Danish is not so much a language but a throat infection".

I love Norway, even though I have never been there but I am going soon when I get the money. I would have to say I have a great intrest in the whole of scandinavia.

There seems to be a few people intrested in New Zealand. Its not as good as you think, but I guess thats just cause I live here. It is bloody great for tramping though!.

They do. Swedish women are ugly, in absolute terms. The so-called sexy Swedish aren't. That is all I have to say about this, only to voice another view. De gustibus non disputandum est.

For me, it's a tie between Japan and Sweden. Japan because I love the culture, the history, and Akihabara. Sweden because I agree with a lot of their politics. Also, my grandparents were Swedes, and I can pass for one in Sweden if I keep my mouth shut. :)

Indonesia.. Blargh. Well, as long as your not directly in the city. Jakarta sucks.

And if you like the quiet & simple life, then it might suit you at the outskirts (but IMO, Thailand and Malaysia is much better). But working in Indonesia the pay sucks, unless it's in the big cities, even then working lifestyle, it still sucks. So unless your retiring there and have enough money to live out the rest of your life, I wouldn't recommend... Anyway, one man's heaven is another Hell. :D

Jakarta is quite good if your VERY LOADED though. But if your VERY LOADED, Singapore would still be better.
