I'm done. As I'm one step from forum-ban anyway, I think I'll just quit while I'm ahead. Perhaps I'll kick around a bit longer here, today, but...basically, I think I've had my say.

Maybe I'll pop in and lurk now and again, but I just realized the bad taste in my mouth doesn't stem from the coffee I drank, it's due to this place. I could go on at length, but what's the point? It's not as though anyone cares one way or another.

I said I'm leaving today, that I might just kick around a little before going away into the ether. Right now, I'm "checking in". Having a look around. And checking out again.

Having checked in, it's no surprise that I'd want to take a look at my last thread/poll. Some have suggested here that my departure is untrue, a 'cry for attention' - that supposition is untrue, and would never get a response had I chosen to be utterly absolutist about my decision to leave.

Why then the poll? It's my last kick at the can - I wanted a goodbye thread with all the trimmings. So a poll seemed apropos. It's also a means whereby I can see whether any of the things I've said or done on NS have had an impact of any sort, be it positive or negative.

I guess the niggest reason that I'm leaving is that for a long while now, I've felt like a bystander watching Rome burn, while simultaneously watching the Romans argue amongst themselves over hyperlinks to websites on fire extinguishers, and whether those hyperlinks are pro-empire or not. Mixing my metaphors somewhat, but I'm long since past caring whether all the linear-thinking cyphers out there make of anything I say.

All I want to do is get a bag of marshmallows, a long stick, and a cozy rock to prop my ass against - I'll let the rest of you try to figure out how to put out the fire.

No, I won't be returning after today. If the political Left on NS needs a voice, then speak up, damnnit. I said somewhere on here a long time ago that there's nothing worse than being stuck in a roomful of people who all agree on things - I think I called it a 'mutual head-nodding' society.

Well, there is something worse I suppose...always holding the minority point of view (by coincidence, not by design), and having the chance to see just how ugly the majority can get in an effort to forestall change and rigorously maintain an unequitable status quo.

Uglier still is seeing a majority of people abandon that (still) unequitable status quo for something obviously worse, then stomping remorselessly on those dissenting voices who have at heart equitability, not just equitability for themselves, but equitability for all.

So...let it burn. By the time all you apologists out there realize the extent to which you, your children, their children, ad nauseam, have been fucked over by a group of rich, old white men who couldn't give a crap about any of you, your freedom, or any aspect of you other than your spending power, there won't be anything worth salvaging from the inferno.

But with luck, I'll still have my long stick, my cozy rock, and a few marshmallows left over. I won't say 'I told you so', 'cause I won't need to.
