We're dull in bed

88% of Canucks admit it in poll

By ROCHELLE SQUIRES, STAFF REPORTER

If your TV gets turned on more than your lover, you're not alone. A recent poll by the makers of K-Y products revealed 88% of Canadians rate themselves as mediocre lovers, whereas only 12% of Canadians said they deserve an A+ for their performance between the sheets.

"As far as technique, I think generally we do all right. It's in, out, repeat as necessary," said Sue McGarvie, a Canadian sex therapist, educator and host of a call-in radio show, Sunday Night Sex with Sue. "But we need to make sex a higher priority on the laundry list."

The K-Y study found 65% of Canadians believe emotional intimacy is the most important quality in a great lover, followed by intellectual arousal (21%), being fearless in the bedroom (12%) and having a sexy body (3%).

McGarvie said Valentine's Day is a perfect time for couples to kick-start their lovers' hearts.

"Take a moment to check in with your partner," she said. "Really hot lovers make time for love because time leads to romance. And not just in a sexual way, it's also about being intimate."

When it comes to sex, men are often turned on by visual stimulation and women are turned on by imaginative and auditory stimulation, she said. "Girls are turned on by what they hear and guys are turned on by what they see," said McGarvie.

SCORE POINTS

Men can score points by leaving their partner a sexy voice mail and women can reciprocate by wearing lingerie, she added.

Linda Proulx, the owner of Love Nest boutiques in Winnipeg, said a lot of couples let sex become routine and are looking to add excitement in the bedroom.

"It's a common problem in long-term relationships, and in younger couples just coming off the honeymoon phase," said Proulx.

She advises couples start with small steps on their way to steamy sex.

"You've got to start with the basics. Get the romance right and everything falls from there," she said. "Pour a bubble bath for your partner or give them a body massage."

Reading erotic literature and sex manuals is also an excellent way to improve the sex in a relationship, she said.

Toys are also becoming increasingly popular among lovers to "get the blood flowing," Proulx said, adding there is less of a stigma associated with sexual vibrators and toys for both men and women.

"My customer base has increased by 10% in the last few years. People are becoming much more comfortable with (toys)," Proulx said. "Even men are learning that toys aren't threatening and can be a fun addition to any relationship."

You also know what they say: Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but teach a man to fish and he'll be really pissed off at you.

I thought it was teach a man to fish and he won't do anything but sit in a boat and drink beer all day?

Yes that as well, but the man I taught had a 30-06 rifle.

Actually, it's just that we Canadians are modest, and feel that it is inappropriate to brag about our sexual prowess to some anonymous pollster.

:D

Well, my explanation does fit with the stereotype of the Canadian psyche!

My aunt (who is only 5 years older than me and really, more like a cousin) gave me The New Good Vibrations Guide to Sex when I graduated high school... she said it would help me out in college!

Of course, this all happened at my high school graduation party, where, among others, my 90+ year old great-grandmother (who is now 100) happened to be.

Talk about getting red-faced...

But! All that aside, I actually recommend it... it's a great book. (And was a fave of my college friends.)

By the way, the Good Vibrations company (it's a store, too) also publishes a great porn movie guide.

Maybe if Canadians spent more time licking the jar - if you know what I mean, and I think you do - they wouldn't have to worry so much about cutting the mustard.
