You should really get a look at the extentions available for fireFox.

I got one that gives me weather forcasts, auto-copies text that I highlight, checks my gmail, opens up irc chatrooms with a single click of a link, and a bunch of other customizable features.

You should really take another look.

Why should I get a bunch of extensions, when I can get everything I need in one simple package? Opera can block pop-ups (only unwanted such), handle my file transfers efficiently with a resume function if necessary, it has mouse gestures that greatly speed up my browsing. I can easily zoom pages, use full screen mode, handle my bookmarks in a simple way, and much more.

Sorry, but I'm not switching browsers.

Well, for starters it's less susceptible to all the worms that exploit IE.
It also has tabbed browsing, runs faster than IE on my system, and it has many add-ons that you can obtain.

Also, it's not Microsoft.

If you do get it, try this tip from Branin, whom officially rocks for giving everybody this tip:

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

I used Firefox and was V. happy with it but the other 3 people using the computer got pisssed off with it taking over. I had to download plugins individually for each user for some reason and they just never got to grips with it. How can I use it without them being affect in any way?

Holy cow!

Firefox was already fast. When I did the alterations there, it just lept into lightspeed.

As far as those that would rather stick with IE, I tell you now that I was the SAME as you. I thought it was silly to download a new browser.

But, my computer runs so much faster now that I have switched. You can download a toolbar or a side program to block popups for IE, but now comes standard with Firefox. Exploits that would chew everything up in IE now don't happen.

Best of all, I have gone from 3-5 crashes a day with IE to 1 crash a month with Firefox.

Tabbed browsing is good too. But the best thing is the computer runs ever so much faster and better than what IE could even think of doing.

If you like IE but you also like the look of Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox and their ilk, then you might want to consider downloading SlimBrowser (http://www.flashpeak.com/sbrowser/) which is based on IE but has many of the features of tabbed browsers. It's fully customisable and has a support forum as good as the Mozilla one. I've been using it for about 18 months now and I'd not change to any other browser for love nor money. Because I use the Mozilla e-mail client (Thunderbird) I downloaded Firefox but... nope. Just not as good as SlimBrowser.

What I look for in a browser is functionality and ease of use. I'm a technidiot and don't want something that's instantly unfamiliar (as I found NN7 to be) and as a result anything remotely Netscapesque horrifies me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that on the right machine to the right person the likes of Firefox are wonderful and funky. But to me, SlimBrowser is the Wolf's Nadgers. And I recommend it to all my customers too.

This isn't correct. The only difference between registered and non-registered Opera is that the non-registered version has inobtrusive adverts at the top. I don't even see them anymore. Despite the banners, Opera still has a larger browser window than Firefox (especially if I run in full-screen mode!) And I can zoom the window if I feel the text is too small!

IE is NOT perfect!

It is virus prone, it's only 4 megs, it does NOT go into the System(unlike IE does), and it's faster if you have broadband.

Seriously, you are the last person to suggest that microsoft rules. Go try Firefox or Opera(the first one is better, but some people say the second). Firefox is only 4 megs, Opera 11, and its a quick download and then installation. Then try it. Trust me, you'll have a blast.

IE has holes out the wazoo allowing tons of spyware on to your system and allowing virus execution. not only that but have you ever looked at the process used by IE? as far as i can tell any browser uses a good ~20k system resources. and what little arrow are you babbling about? you mean the shortcut arrow? really is that all you have?

The more people that move to firefox, the more expoilts will turn up. Why? Because it becomes a more lucrative target. There were plenty of exploits last fall found in it's skinning system. There are new ones popping up all the time as it comes under more scrutiny.

Does IE suck?

How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity)

Posted on 12/12/2004 12:45:50 PM PST by KoRn

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

I don't really see why everything stylish is labelled as "sexy." :P

I'm using Firebird 0.6.5 for NationStates, and will continue to do so until Firefox can do what it does. It seems all later releases replaced the password-management box with something similar to IE. I used to use Opera here for this feature, but it organized my nations in order of addition, whereas Firebird organizes them by last login, placing the nations most likely to be deleted at the bottom of the list. Half of my nations died yesterday, because I was too slow returning to them, but I still have over 50. :D

I use Opera and Firefox for most other things, but one of my Firebird profiles also handles generic stuff.

No WONDER the stinkin server is soooo sloooow.

I'm switching to IE because it is soooo fast! Downloading wierd browsers is just a waste of internet bandwidth. Microsoft gives us all the software a god fearing Christian will ever need.

I love Bill.

Yeah, but Firefox is so much better than Opera. The Full version of Opera costs like, $30. Firefox is 100% FREEEEE!!!

There is no "full" version of Opera. It's either adware, with hardly noticeable ads that never bothered me, or you've paid for it. Also I've never noticed Firefox being better than Opera in anything, they're pretty much equal except for in one case - Opera is even better protected. Though this comes at the cost of it being overprotected, thus some rare things don't always work.

But as I said, I use them both and like the both, though Opera is my main browser. Also a lot of people should remember how Opera was there to threaten Microsoft's monopoly a lot of time ago (well, Mozilla has been around for a long time as well), even to such a degree that MS faked some of their sites for Opera, so that if your Opera was set to identify itself as Opera, MS sites seemed to be not working properly, but when you set Opera to identify as IE, they all seemed correct.

Also, Opera is a friendly company. They've won my support in a relatively easy way, although very rare these days - good, free, friendly service for a non-paying customer (I use adware Opera, and wouldn't crack it to get rid of the ads even if you paid me, although I don't usually support adware).

I've contaced Opera a couple of times over various subjects, and every time I've received good, fast service

Who cares, we aren't the web people, are we?

Of course, that would be bad for your sites but..

most people use I.E. anyhoo, so ye don't have to worry.

Yet.
But you better :) because it is easy to set the servers to deny request profiles such as that :) pretty soon you wont be seeing any web pages

Oh, and no matter our disagreements on whats better, I'm glad to see no one is defending I.E.A couple of things that I.E. can do:
1. Shows glow text
2. Links can go blurry when mouse is over them
3. Can make little pop-up windows go fullscreen after pressing F11

'Part from that, Firefox is good.
