What (board) strategy game do you like?

Since I feel that Nationstates is like an online strategy game of conquest, I would to know what strategy games, board or computer you guys like to play. I'm sort of interested in Warhammer, and I play a lot of Age of Empires and Heroes III but that's about it.

I kind of like Risk. Maybe it's because I'm eerily good at it. No, seriously, there are people who actually fear me because of it.

I play NukeZone (http://www.nukezone.nu/) religiously. That's actually what determines my sleep cycle.

All of the Settlers/Starfarers of Catan/the Stone Age type games are fairly entertaining. Cosmic Encounter is a classic. Fluxx and Cosmonauts get my seal of approval, even though there's not so much strategy to them.

I play my fair share of Bridge, Euchre, Spades, Pinochle, and Hearts, too.

They're so over-analyzed, though. Today, any 10 year-old can be a grandmaster just by memorizing positions. They don't adequately compare the participants' strategic abilities anymore, unless both players are completely new to the game.

And Othello/Reversi can compare to Go.

Settlers of Catan is brilliant. I introduced it to my workplace a few years ago and we played it almost every day for months on end.

Civilization, as long as you don't mind 12 hour games.

I kind of like Warhammer but would not play jusyt paint them.Bretonians :)
Id actually prefer a real history type mostly based around the 30 years war Dutch Revolution HAbsburgs/Hapsburgs vs Ottamans.

I play Age of Empires alot. but one day when i was playing i saw my men dieing and i couldnt handle it, it was like i got shell shock/Combat stress from the game everytime i lost 1 man id start again-im still not over it.

Id like to see an AOE around the 30 years war Dutch Revolution HAbsburgs/Hapsburgs vs Ottamans.

I liked to play Risk but then some bogus rule that i didnt play with stuffed me up-12 men in a territory one- i like/liked to spread my troops out on my borders(obvious reasons)but didnt know we were playing by the as many men as you want in a territory rule and so this flying wedge(then another) was in the side of me after 2 enemey turns and i havent played since.-mind you ive got no friends so i cant play unless i get it on PS or CPU ;)

STRATEGO!

Capture the enemies flag and win the game!
Sadly, the easiest way to win is to put your flag right behind a lake and surround it with bombs and 7's and 8's. Also rush with your 10, 9, spy and all your scouts.

About last September or October their was a similar thread and it was about WWII games and some CPu games were named one you could be nigh on anynation in the world and you had to worry about Logistical concerns including food and oil and you could only have as meany soldiers as was possible at the time so NZ had about 120,000 soldiers who knows the games name.

And obviouly your opponent dosent know your troop placement so if they send a soldier into a mine its bye bye so you send in a sapper.

He can beat a few people on their B team. Not the good team. The B team. And that was in high school when he played it regularly, over 15 hours a week. He hasn't actually tried that lately. On the other hand, I've gotten his twin brother and his brother's girlfriend interested in FPS's, notably Doom, Quake, and Half Life.

My friends and I love board games so much we started up a club at the University

Warhammer (most incarnations including 40k, Necromunda, even English Civil War, which is just fantastic)
Axis and Allies (between three of us we have both version of A&A World, plus A&A Europe, A&A Pacific and A&A D-Day - the next A&A, I hope, is a historical recreation like D-Day, though maybe the rules should be playtested a bit more. Or, if the rules are playtested enough already, maybe they should get people who have good luck to playtest it - my poor Panzer divisions get slaughtered by those damned Allied fighters)

lesse... there's also Chess and Go, and Risk (VP of the student union came out once with Risk LotR too)

Good times... good times...

eh... I don't much like risk, it's too random for my sake. Clues in the title, but it really grates on me. I like monopoly, mind.

As for computer games.... I like the whole TW series, especially rome, Total annihilation, because Core are the best, BFME, because sometimes Uruk-hai are more fun than Phalanxes. Cossacks is good, but I ain't played it in ages.. as is Blitzkrieg, but that's more of a puzzle game, the way each map plays out.

Basically, I like all good RTS and turn based games except civ and risk, because they're too random. But Rome/TA/C&C rule them all.

I'm sorry, but any game that needs to produce a "talking electronic Star Wars" version to maintain its marketability has problems.

Meanwhile, Diplomacy has been going strong in non-electronic, non-talking, non-Star Wars versions. In fact, the game is so damn good, people draw their own boards and play with pushpins, just like junkies shooting up with homemade hypodermics!

Advanced Third Riech.
WWII epic. Like Axis and Allies on steroids. It ups the complexity, and the coold factor from Axis and Allies to much the same degree that they are way more complex and cooler than Risk.
Of course, the rule book is the size of a novel, and the board is 8 foot by 5 feet.
And, the people I first saw play it, went back and forth for 2 weeks, every weekend and every night after work. They played it in an RPG shop that had taken over an old bank, they set the board up in the old Vault, so it was very cool, like a bunker.

Does that mean Risk, Monopoly, and practically every other board game in existence is bad because they decide to make a few extra bucks by luring in Fanboys of a particular movie?

If you only play chess because the pieces are shaped like the Simpsons or play Risk because the little plastic soldiers look like Darth Vaders, you're either twelve or have real problems. Real games don't need wanker fanboy gimmicks. This is why I puked when I heard MLB was planning to put Spiderman logos on the bases.
