Personally, I'd go with either The Glorious Burden or Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Actually, now that I think about it, many people probably haven't heard of Iced Earth. Here's their website (www.icedearth.com).

I realize that "Days of Purgatory" and "Alive in Athens" aren't really independent albums, but I thought I'd include them anyway.

What sort of music is this. I like the idea that the theme for their music is history though.

They're a heavy metal band. They are most similar the Iron Maiden, though it's hard to compare them to any one band.

It's power metal, basically. And their theme isn't always historical, but the guitarist (Schaffer) wanted to go with something a little more patriotic with their newest album. That would be the Glorious Burden. A lot of their other stuff has political themes mixed in with fantasy literature or stuff like Dante's Inferno.

Since Demons and Wizards doesn't count, I'd have to go with Something Wicked. Burnt Offerings is a close second.

I'm going to have to go with The Blessed and the Damned, since it's the only Iced Earth music I own. Lots of awesome songs on the two cd set.

It's just a greatest hits sorta thing, though, right?

Even though Iced Earth doesn't have any "hits," per se.

I have to go with Something Wicked on this one. Overall, the Matt Barlow albums are the best, I think. Days of Purgatory is a revisiting of earlier works when they were called Purgatory. And The Glorious Burden features their new lead singer, Tim Owens (formerly of Judas Priest). But I think Something Wicked really stands out above everything else.
