I am of the preverbial 'Old School' Sonic The Hedgehog era (i.e. Sega MegaDrive/Genesis) and have always known the bad guy as 'Doctor Robotnik'. After glimpsing at a recent Sonic cartoon, I notice that he is now addressed as 'Dr. Eggman'.

Who, what, how, when and why did THAT happen?

Is he a relative/clone/evil twin? if so, what happened to the original Dr. Robotnik?

Jebus, didn't you play Sonic Adventure 1? Tails gives Dr. Robotnik the nickname early in the game and it sticks.

Why SEGA did this, I dunno. Maybe becasue he's shaped like an egg, kinda. I think it's stupid, anyway.

As a 14 yr old, Robotnik still sticks with me. I sometimes wonder who the eff Dr. Eggman is till I give it some thought.

In the older cartoons Sonic called hik Robuttnik. I've never actually heard of Dr. Eggman.

I didn't even know they renamed him. I still have my Sega Genesis and my copy of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and he's called Dr. Robotnik in that. That's all I need.

Whats more important is the fact that in the new sonic games you can occasionally spot posters for PSO, a far superior game entirely. Plus you can gain access to Ristar in a couple of them as well. Which is another game thats better than sonic.

I thought it was because in Japan he's always been known as Dr. Eggman, so they just switched that over to the rest of the world. That's what I heard, anyway.

Yeah I heard that too off a mate of mine. Pretty good source, considering he is like sega personified (owns lots of sega stuff)

Dr Robotnik is still called so, but Eggman is just his nickname from Sonic and Tails. I think it's because of those pods he always drives in.

He was named 'Dr Eggman' after he built the Death Egg in Sonic 2, attempting to destroy mobius. From what I understand after looking into the comics, Eggman is Robotniks son or somthing.

I have never played Sonic The Hedgehog after he advanced beyond the megadrive. (With the exception of Sonic Racer for the PC) So I am oblivious to any storyline after that.

For all you classic Sonic fans, there is now a PS2 and Xbox release that has all the classic Sonic games from the Megadrive, Gamegear, Master system 1 and 2 and a few more!! Its called Sonic Mega Collection Plus. Here is a link to the Gamestation site that is selling it!

In any case, this cartoon I saw the clip on was in Japanese Anime style (with the animation and the talking etc...) So I guess if the Japanese call him Eggman, then I suppose it translates that to English.

Sonic was brown and Dr. Eggman a nice scientist who made him this cool pair of shoes that could make him go in supersonic speed.
He did went in supersonic speed, but something made his color go from brown to blue (IT´S A COMIC! I WON´T GIVE ANY FUCKING SCIENTIFIC FACT TO BACK THIS UP).
Some days later, the lab of Dr. Eggman exploded and Dr. Eggman turned evil.
Apparently this was trashed in sonic adventures... :rolleyes:

Yeah, I heard from someone else that he was always Eggman in Japan; they just stopped bothered changing it to Robotnik for Eur/US markets. Sucks though! I've always loved Sonic since I first played it on the Megadrive (that's the Genesis to Americans). Even have 3 of the novels, 4 of the adventure books and I used to get Sonic the Comic (that was a long long time ago now...) how sad is that! Hehe :)

Sad? I wouldn't have thought so. I've even got a video with two Sonic cartoon episodes from the series they showed in the mornings on Channel 4 Years ago! :)

Ok, I was never in to the comics, but I had a friend who was...

Dr. Robotnik died...Thing blew up and such and he died and whatever...
Like a computer or something had a copy of his brain in it or something like that, and they roboticized him a body or something like that.

So yeah, either it's the result of the above, or the people making the show are dumbasses and decided to change his name. I vote some kind of combination of the two.

Anyway, I've only seen like half an episode, and it was gay and stupid. Sonic used to be cool and all, but they've just destroyed it.

Sonic Adventure was pretty good, as much as I played it. SA2 sucked, in my opinion, and Shadow is nothing more than a cheap, easy marketing ploy: "OMG There's another hedgehog like Sonic! *gasp*" Sonic has always been, and always will be, the coolest, screw Shadow.
Sonic Heros is pretty good, though
Meh, I'm disappointed that Sonic and friends didn't show up on Smash Bros. Melee.

Which, BTW, I think the coolest game would be a Smash Bros.-ish game compiled from and made for all systems. And Sonic would definitely have to be on it.

I liked that older thing better! It would've been cooler than just the "He was always a super freakish fast hedgehog thing".
