The question had to be asked and it would be good to hear why certain messengers are better than others from users out there.

I don't know of them all so I will put an "other" option for those that I missed and you can pick that if you likey. Tell us what it is though, if you do pick that option :p

Trillian is not a messenger service. It's an application that connects to several different messenger services. Gaim is another instance of such an application.

okay but it is a messenger in the sense that you use the program to talk to people. It may connect to other messenger services but I still consider it a messenger.

And your operating system runs the programs that connect to the messenger services. Windows must be the greatest messenger of them all!

Msn is my favourite only because all my friends have it ..

I hate Msn 7.0 beta with a passion (as you know from the other thread), I think it is so irritating.

ICQ isn't bad, I don't like AIM, and I've never tried Yahoo :)

Well I was going to choose AIM, but since you are counting Gaim... then that's what I choose.

Yeah I guess you gotta use what all your friends are using. Luckily most of my friends use yahoo as well as others.

I've found that MSN is very popular with younger people, and AIM/ICQ are very popular with people who've been online for a long time. It's not necessarily because they have better features. It's just because most people they know used them first. MSN has been provided with Windows for as long as the youngins were allowed to use the computer. Back in the olden days, ICQ was all that there was. Shortly afterward, AIM came along and had very different features.

Here's what I don't like about MSN. They only provide support for Windows. If you use Linux, then you're stuck with Gaim (but that actually makes it better, in my opinion). You have to use your e-mail address as your screenname. There are very few options that you can configure. For example, in order to get rid of those stupid blue boxes in the corner of your screen, you have to hack the registry.

I :fluffle: Gaim! And ICQ is cool too. MSN is pretty good, but it dies to often.

It works on my computer...unlike AIM, which insists on not working and signing off without my permission...and lying on top of it. I talk to people and it claims it has delivered the message when in fact it doesn't, making me very hard to communicate with on AIM.

I like Trillian because I can connect to MSN through it, when it's not dead. And if MSN does die I can use Trillian to connect to other instant messaging services like Yahoo.
