I am very fond of the word 'chebs', even though it's not a propper word.

Neither. I thought there were some H.L. Mencken fans here, but apparently not. It is a neologism he coined during Prohibition, meaning "drinking everything". It is a contration of omnibibulous. Mencken was indeed an etymologist that gave way to euphony.

Indeed. However, it is correctly spelled ueber if you do not have the ability or motivation to add the umlaut. But, meh, it doesn't matter much really. I correct that when I see it, but it has been adopted into English and will become fully anglicised sooner or later.

If we're going to get into a "I know more obscure words than you" contest I can't compete with some of these but I've always thought syzygy had a nice ring to it. I absolutely destroyed my family using that word in a game we had which was similar to hangman, once.
