No poll, merely to get an idea. A few maybe worth mentioning are Ensemble, Age of Empires and Age of Mythology creators, Big Huge, creators of Rise of Nations and Firefly, creators of Stronghold. Who creates your favourite games?
The Emperor Fenix

Westwood studios and their C&C Tiberium games. Not their non Tiberium ones but Sun & Dawn were good... very very good.

Yes, Paradox (Swedish Developer) is without a doubt one of the most innovative game companies out there. Europa Universialis I and II, Victoria, and Hearts of Iron I and II. They definantely make some good games that have a lot of depth to them. Another very good game developer would be Golem Labs with there amazing geo-political game Superpower I and II.

Same for LucasArts and their best game, Monkey Island, one of the funniest games out there, even today.
Sid Meier is also good, the Civ series.

And another nomination by me, for Chris Sawyer "Transport Tycoon" and "Locomotion". (same game just updated)

Microprose (R.I.P.), back in the day, created some of the greatest games ever conceived. Sid Meier is a genius.

Looking Glass (R.I.P), Bullfrog (R.I.P?), Blizzard, Origin (R.I.P.), S.S.I (R.I.P.) Square and Paradox are all really good too.

Blizzard also did Baldurs Gate, for which I am eternally grateful! :p

That was Bioware actually. And add them to my list.

SNK before they started to only produce cheap re-hashes.

CCP (EvE Online)

Bullfrog (Syndicate)

EA, back then when they were not the Devil (and they ARE!)

Square, but only back in the SNES-times, now they're mediocre at best.

SEGA, of course.

LucasArts, back in the adventuretimes - alright, maybe Republic Commando will be good.

If we were to judge simply by the number of hours I have played their games, Terratools would be the ultimately, number one developer of all time for this guy. Yes, Taerkasten just referred to himself in the third person. No he's not insane. I only ever played one of their games (Urban Assault), and even though it was made in 1998, I still play it. I played it today, in fact. It's a shame they went the way of the dodo.

If you're only interested in living developers, Digital Anvil is next on my list. Starlancer + Freelancer = joy.

Trivia: Remember when Origin was running that contest where if you sent in your picture, they would choose some as models for the next Ultima? They chose mine for a "King Arthur" game which never got published, sadly... :-D I didn't know whether to be relieved or disappointed, since the character I was to be the model for was apparently a nun. ;)

4) a servant who retrieves goblin beer?

1. Valve.
2. Chris Sawyer (Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Rollercoaster Tycoon)
3. Lionhead Studios/Peter Molyneux (Populous/Black and White 1 and 2)
4. Digital Reality (Imperium Galactica 1-2, Haegemonia)
5. Blizzard (Diablo II - their support sucks though)
6. American McGee (American McGee's Alice, fantastic Quake 2 level designer)
7. Sid Meier (Civilisation)
8. Warren Spector/Eidos (Thief: Deadly Shadows/Deus Ex/System Shock)

Paradox is certainly top shelf.
Konami is up there (the Suikoden series).
Will have to see the next Xenosaga before making a call on them (Namco/MonolithSoft).
And of course, there is one that eceryone has overlooked, SquareEnix. Now that they're joined, they justify a place. Square's old games (SNES, FF7, FFT, Xenogears) were good, Enix has always chugged along at about the same pace (Star Ocean series, Dragon Warrior series). I never knew Enix on cartridges, I hated Square on CD's, between the two, it's a fine company.
Almost forgot, Eidos - Legacy of Kain
Rainbirdtopia

I once annihilated my entire army in a LAN game with a Wight. I told him to attack an incoming unit, and I forgot how slowly he moved. When he detonated, he was right in the middle of all my army. Which had 4 dwarves in it. Laden down with satchel charges. Which detonated.

Another player, on the other side of the map, wondered why he heard a dull boom and had body parts landing on his men...
