The first time I heard this joke, it was before NationStates. A store-owner friend of mine handed me a flyer that was given to him. It looked like an environmental protest flier listing all the bad things about "Dihydrogen Monodixe". My friend was asking me to explain to him what it meant. I explained it as I read it. While I was doing that, I was saying:

"Hmmm.... Dihydrogen Monoxide.... I haven't heard of this, before, give me a moment to figure out what this molecule looks like.... Dihydrogen... mono... Wait, that's water. Water? This guy wants to ban water!?"

I think that there should be a ban on French dihydrogen monoxide, as it is an overpriced version of the stuff that already comes out of their taps.

One might also consider that dihydrogen monoxide is widely used in nuclear power plants as coolant - it is definitely one of those dual-use products that needs to be carefully monitored.
