Ah, for the lost days of the Drive-In movie.
At their high-water mark in 1958, Drive-Ins accounted for more than 4,000 movie screens. Today, there are fewer than 500 drive-ins nationwide.
Although Drive-Ins have declined Drive-In “type” movies are still being made. A Drive-In movie is one that is over the top, has a story painted in broad brush strokes, acting that falls short (often by a wide margin) of Academy Award material, reliance on visuals over plot, yet is eminently watchable (make-out material is definitely a plus).
In short - a guilty pleasure.
Some modern day movies that would have been perfect in a Drive-In theatre:
Titanic
Independence Day
Jurassic Park
The Mummy
Stargate
Troy
Lord of the Rings
Waterworld (and most movies starring Kevin Costner)
any James Bond movie
Can you think of any other modern movies that were just meant for a Drive-In?
