10 years ago and now. Difference?

So ...

Many of us were told growing up that it is essential to set goals for yourself and blah blah blah. All that 80s pablum about "Envision yourself 1, 5, and 10 years from now! What do you see?"

Anyway, think back to high school or early college. If you're still in High School, well, you have my sympathies. How does what you thought you would be doing then compare with what you're doing now.

Me: I figured by now I'd be renegotiating my contract with the Houston Astros (that's a baseball team, if you don't know) and considering retirement endorsements.

Funny how life is what happens when you're busy making other plans, eh?

Ten years from now, I could see myself in one of four situations. One of them is just graduating from college with a degree in Veterinary medicine, the next is Being in the United States Marine Corp, the third is dead, #4 I could very much not see this one happening, but here goes, living on the streets.

EDIT: I put what I see myself doing in ten years, cause I'm in High school right now

I was going to be a helicopter gunship pilot for the Royal Australian Army. :mp5:

Now, I'm in a political office doing desktop publishing. I can see the simularities! :p

Ten years ago I was In the middle of doing a degree in Philosophy and Computing. In England, unmarried, with no children.
Now I live in the South of Brazil, I am married, I have one son. But I am still studying philosophy.

None of which were forseeable ten years ago.

When I was finishing high school. Which is a lot longer ago. I wanted to become a veterinarian.

hmm i see myself in 10 years either a tramp, trapped in academia (2nd year in uni now...), the owner of a chain of amsterdam-style coffee shops in the UK (hehe my dream :p ), wasting my days with a monotonous and dreary job while most likely hating it and everything about it, or dead.

10 years ago i wanted to be a vetrinarian.

if you want the unrealistic dreams, you have to go back 15 years. when i was 5 i wanted to be an artist (my mom gave me the starving artist speech) when i was 7 i wanted to be an actress (my mom laughed at me)

In Grade 5, I wanted to be an armed revolutionary somewhere in Latin America. Then, I wanted to be an Anthropologist. Then, around Grade 12, it was back to armed revolutionary. During University, I considered law (specifically immigration and human rights law), education (which I finally went into), and then, back to armed revolutionary. I planned on doing a lot more travelling than I have, and a lot more dangerous political work. I made three promises to myself in High School: 1, I would never get married, 2, I would never have children and 3, I would never dye my hair blonde. I broke all three, and the only one I regret is the 'blonde' moment.

I'm still considering armed revolution....

Yet I'm pacifist...

Maybe in ten years I'll figure it out...

Meanwhile...

a coffee shop is a place you go to smoke, while a koffee shop is where you go to get the drinkable coffee

Ten years ago, I was finishing up my Ph.D. at Georgia Tech and looking forward to a future in academia. Now, I'm glad that my first year of teaching sucked and I found a decent job.

Aw shucks ma'am. :D

I could've used a brain of my own ten years ago though (I was 18), so I wouldn't have been much help.

Hmm, lets see. 10 years ago I was being told that I should better behave otherwise I would not be allowed into the college/high school. And if that happened I would die a lonely premature death. I would be shunned by my peers, be a disappointment to my family and make the baby Jesus cry.

Also preparing for the 11+ exams that were oh so difficult and important  as well as the college entrange exam.

I make this statement for ALL people.

You are goddamn idiots. I'd like to prove this mathematically. Take your current age, and subtract ten years. Were you smart then? Of course you wern't, you were goddamn idiots. Chances are, not a whole lot has changed since then.

Piss off suckers!

10 years ago, I wanted to have a wife, be an airline pilot, be a tornado chaser, and/or take over the world.

I'm slowly achieving that last part. :D

I have yet to fulfill that first part... :( *weeps uncontrollably* (:D)
