What can I say, it's low crime, and doesn't have any third world slum sections like Berlin, New York, and any other large city folks have already named. I've seen my share of large cities, at least 20-30 probably, from Toronto, to Chicago, to Washington DC, to London, to Atlanta. Not a single one, appears to be first world, despite being in first world nations. Only the roads and tall buildings give the illusion of a first world setting.

Digging deeper into a city like London, with the vast "no-go" areas for whites in the eastern slums, tells me that it long ago ceased to be a 1st world city, and is now the sort of place that seems like it belongs in Zimbabwe.

The best place I've been would be Minneapolis/St. Paul... certainly the Minneapolis part. I went there last year and I was amazed at how friendly a place it is, how great the reataurants are, how good a night life it has, and how much they love their hockey.

In the UK there's no city to beat Nottingham. I'm a Derby lad but Nottingham has it all, including the best nightclub in the world (Rock City) and some great pubs and restaurants. Add to that the fact it doesn't stink like London or Birmingham and it's full of scallies with a chip on their shoulder like Liverpool or Manchester and you've got everything yuo could possibly want.

Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, North East Brazil.

A State capital, so all the infrastructure you need. Not a tourist destination (yet) so it is not too expensive, but it is beautiful (http://www.geocities.com/andre_lira/jpfotos.html)

No great sports teams, but with these beaches, who needs them.

How is Mentor a city? It barely has over 50,000 inhabitants...

Nottingham? Hah! If you want to live in the city with the highest amount of gum crime in the UK.

Whites have to stay away from East London? I wish someone told me that before I started living here... Bleh, I'd rather living in an inner city area than any bland, mass manufactured suburb.

I haven't been to many cities... Paris alway seemed pretty though.

Paris may be the best city in the world... great culture and cosmopolitan living, yet you can live in a lovely, small-town-like neighborhood and know all the shopkeepers. And I really love how everyone still observes niceties such as greeting each other in stores and excusing themselves if they bump into each other on the street (unlike in Philadelphia, where they make snide comments and shoot each other dirty looks, or in Seville where people are just totally oblivious). Plus I think it'd be a wonderful place to raise kids.

San Francisco is gorgeous, and would be a comfortable place to live, but a little less emotionally thrilling.

New Orleans is fun but insanely depressing - I don't think I'd like to live in a city where you regularly see young black men crouching, with the shoed feet of middle-aged middle-class white men resting on their knees, polishing shoes.

Florence is lovely, but I'd rather go for a long vacation than live there - it's a not quite as wonderfully cosmopolitan as Paris.

And New York is downright overwhelming - plus, everybody's always rushing and doesn't seem willing to slow down to enjoy life or each other.

Well, I meant the daily interactions - you're less likely to find friendly, easy-going shopkeepers in NYC (yes, there are always exceptions, particularly if you take time to loosen up the people in your area, but I'm generalizing here)... and people don't seem to take time out for the small pleasures, like a leisurely lunch, or sitting in a cafe and watching the world.

heh...what you missed about Philadelphia is its citizenry takes pride in its snarliness...in fact, i'd say we've perfected the art of snide and cynical.

when i travel to other places and people are NICE i start to wonder what's wrong and are they going to maim me...i'm used to getting served by surly waitstaff; being ignored by shop keepers; being clucked at by people on the street who think i'm in their way (when really they're in mine...but from a philadelphian's prospective, the other person is always in your way); and riding a public transit system where the bus drivers may or may not stop for you (depending on their mood), aim for the bicyclists in the street, and freely drive through red lights.

ah philly, how doth i adore thee...

and the crowning glory of all this? It's "The City of Brotherly Love", one of it's more famous public places is "Love Park" and its slogan is "The City that Loves you Back". Heh.

where else in the world would a bunch of catholic high school girls beat the crap out of some dude who flashed them while the neighborhood adults looked on, merely commenting to police "hey, the guy had it coming to him"?

GAWD I love this town!!

I will admit that Philadelphia will always have a place in my heart. (How could it not? I was born here, lived a large chunk of my childhood admiring the skyline from Upper Darby, and returned for college.)

That's the best "city" (or village :p ) in the World. You can't locate it on map, but it is in Finland :)

Places you never ever heard of, and never would were it not for NS have to be the best places in the world. Sounds like fun if you like gliding (http://www.nummelanlentokeskus.fi/visitors.html)

1. Stockholm
2. London
3. Tampere

Have to say, I do like Stockholm (but then, I live not so far, and I work there). And London is cool. But, Tammerfors/Tampere? I have to say it's not one of Finland's highlights for me. I like Åbo and Helsingfors/Helsinki. Had a good night out in the very small town of Ekenäs once too which wasn't bad.

The Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group and Network lists World Cities in three categories (Alpha, Beta, and Gamma), each with three subcategories. The 10 Alpha cities are:

a) London and New York
b) Chicago, Hong Kong, Paris, Tokyo
c) Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Milan, Singapore

The 10 Beta World Cities are:

a) San Francisco, Sydney, Toronto, Zurich
b) Brussels, Madird, Sao Paulo, Seoul
c) Mexico City, Moscow

I pretty much agree with it other than LA's ranking. Way too high. And New York is nowhere near as great as London. Other than that, it's pretty accurate.

Since plenty of people have nominated San Fransico there's no need for me too. Instead I'll pimp another Northern California city-Santa Cruz-

It's where Hawaiins first introduced surfing to the mainland, it's never too cold or too hot, the 'hey look at me' bar is set so high that a guy in a Spiderman outfit climbing lamposts couldn't get so much as a glance. Our mayor handed out marijuana when the feds raided a medical marijuana co-op. It's the third stage of snottiness towards people moving there. (First stage-people coming to California, newbs Second Stage-Coming to San Fransico, uppermiddle class newbs, maybe techies Third Stage-People from San Fransico coming to Santa Cruz to get away from all the newbs, becoming newbs themselves. You can't crawl much further up your own ass than that.)

More art screens than mainstream screens.

It's easier to buy local than it is to buy from chains.

At any given moment, the following is happening: Dogtown and the Z Boys is playing, someone is protesting something, and someone who moved here because of the color is talking to thier spouse about what to do about all this color.

I love this city.

I hope you have at least been to New York to make that statement. It's all subjective anyway, i think it's useless to say someone disgusts you because they love a different city than you. As i mentioned, i have not been outside of North America, for all i know, Berlin, Paris, London, Sydney, Budapest, etc. could all be nicer cities, and they are all places i want to visit someday. All i know is that when i first set foot in New York City i fell in love with it. I have never felt about any place the way i feel about New York, including my hometown. I actually miss it when i'm not there. I do have lots of friends there, so naturally that enhances the experience, i always have a blast when i'm with them. Have I been to New York? OF COURSE! I have traveled across the world; of course I've been to New York.

Anyhoo, Boston is the best city of all. It's just b-e-a-u-tiful! In the Autumn, I drive by in my car, seeing people bike in the parks while the orange and yellow New England leaves fall from the trees, and then I take a turn and go get some good ole' New England Chowdah. Then I drive through the Big Dig(I even love that), and get to Logan, and get to my lounge. I then look out over the city of Boston with it's skyscrapers reaching oh-so-high, but there aren't so many as to make it feel crowded. I then hop on my airplane, and from the air I see the awe-inspiring beauty of the city. The houses by the bay, the airport, Fenway Park, everything in Boston looks good from the air OR ground.

Oh, if I were ruler of the U.S., all people who liked New York more than Boston would be on the trains heading towards the camps...

That is where you are wrong, my friend. The best small Capital city in the world would have to be, without a doubt, Islamabad, Pakistan. It was only created 50 years ago, and it is seemlessly designed. There are HUGE parks everywhere, beautiful, green, and tree-covered hills at the edge of the city. Due to the fact that it is at the edge of the mountains of north Pakistan and the grasslands of central Pakistan, it has a diverse amount of vegetation, views, and all sorts of stuff.

New York wasn't the first capital, boy! If you don't remember, Philidelphia was. that's where the congress was, the leaders, etc, and while I HATE everyone who says that Philidelphia was the birthplace of the revolution, I do agree theywere the first Capital.

The revolution ended, and NYC was the capital before it was moved to the more centralized Philly while they decided where next for the capital to be built. There is a big as hell monument downtown at the site of where Washington was inaugurated, and the pub in which Washington gave his farewell address is still in NYC. NYC was Tory town throughout the Rev War but that changed when most of them left rather than stay in NYC.

As for not attempting to rebel the British had all major cities on the coastlines under their control. There was thing called the British navy...ever hear of it? They were once pretty fearful in size? Boston and Philly fell to the Brits, does that make them less patriotic? Hell Washington fought several battles against the Brits in NYC itself and lost. Not our fault the Brits easily out manuvered him and had support from the British fleet.

As for Boston? Pffft..they win 1 world series in 80 something years and they think they're the best? My ass. The Yankees continue to claim the best baseball franchise in history title with more world championships than any other baseball team. Boston can have its world series, they had the second highest payroll in baseball. It only made sense. But their team? Dismantled faster than the Russian navy after the collapse of the Soviet union.

I asked if you had been to New York because i have had plenty of experience with people who will judge something when they haven't actually experienced it. Those opinions don't hold much water with me. You've been there though so i completely respect the fact that you don't like it, not everyone does. I've never been to Boston, but it is a city i would like to go to someday.

See, at least you'll try. I officaly declare you on my "Not-disgusted with" list.

1)The US wasnt a country until after the war. No one recongized the US as such until after the Paris Peace Talks. The first seat of the OFFICAL government was in New York City.

2)Trade flourished in NYC because thats where the British parked a majority of their fleet since it provided a good harbor capable of striking anywhere up and down the coastline of the colonies with ease. And no you didnt win at Boston. New York, then the nation's second largest city, was briefly the capital of the new United States of America, in 1789 and 1790, and George Washington was inaugurated as President in New York on the steps of Federal Hall. If we are copying an pasting from Wiki then:

João Pessoa is the capital of Paraíba, a state in the northeast region of Brazil. It's the state's largest and most important city, with a population of about 640,000 (about one sixth of the state's population - 2004 estimate). It is close to Ponta do Seixas, the easternmost point of the Americas at 34º 47' 38" west longitude and 7º 9' 28" south latitude.

Founded in 1585 as Filipéia, it is the third oldest city in Brazil. It fell under Dutch occupation from 1634 to 1654, and was called Friederstadt. Portugal then reclaimed it and called it Paraíba, and in 1930 it assumed its current name, after a famous politician from the region.

Tourism is one of its chief economic activities, together with construction, food, metalworking, and other industries. Sugar cane agriculture and related industries are also important. It is home to the Federal University of Paraíba, and other smaller private universities, which attract many students from other states.

João Pessoa has many green areas scattered among its avenues, parks, and residential neighbourhoods, which make it very pleasant and the second greenest city of the world. It mixes modern buildings with historic ones from colonial times, and hosts important museums and cultural institutions.

The question I have, is which, then is the greenest city in the world?

1)There was no one united currency. Each colony still had its own currency, and the currency put out by the colonial government was literally worthless. And no shit NYC wasnt the Capital for long. The thing is..the first OFFICAL UNITED STATES congress met in..dun dun dun dunnnnn NYC. And in 1776 no one recongized the US as a free and independent country..why do you think it took so long for France to come to our aid during the war? The Treaty of Paris 1783 was what gained the US OFFICAL status as a free and independent country from Britain.

http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/09/05/federal.hall/index.html

Not only is the building just a few blocks from the site of the World Trade Center where more than 2,800 people died, it stands on the site where the first Congress under the Constitution convened in 1789

The first offical US capital under our Constitution, was in NYC.

2)Real symbolic victory there. Truth of the matter is NYC wasnt a traitorous city. Washington just got kicked out by a larger force. 3 Battles were fought in the NYC area. Battle of Brooklyn, Battle of Harlem, and the Battle of Ft. Washington. And Washington was forced to retreat into Jersey.

3)Steinbrenner has been owner of the team for a long time. But the Yankee team has not always had money. There were plenty of years where money didnt really matter either. The whole Free Agency thing changed that.

Columbia is Ivy League so is Harvard, MIT is a world reknown so is NYU. And the Boston population is 500,000 so having about 25% of the city enrolled in college just means its just one big college town.

NYC is 10 million people. No way in hell will 25% of the city ever be enrolled in college.

Sorry, as a former NYUer, I got to say Harvard and MIT are both a cut above. In the sciences, only Caltech compares to MIT. All Ivy Leagues are not equal. And you can't discredit Harvard for being in Cambridge. That's like excluding the outer boroughs from NYC.

Not really, the "Greater Boston" area doesnt get counted as being part of Boston itself. Otherwise they'd take the population of Boston as being 5.7 mil and they'd be the second largest city in the US. Boston is like New York before the boroughs joined together in the city charter.

Look, it's real simple. If you want to make a case for NYC being the better city, all you have to do is say things like:

Home of the stock exchange.
More languages spoken per capita than any other U.S. city.
Largest American city.
Best pastrami on the planet.
Home of Nathan's Hot Dogs.

But no. You've got to be the smaller man and go pick some nits about who did what in the revolution or whether or not it's fair to count Harvard as a "Boston" school (try to find someone to agree with you on that).

4) Alot of Irish People(Come on, don't tell me you don't like Irish Drinks? I can do without the food though...)
5) Alot of Polish People.
6) Logan Airport is ALOT less crowded, fugly, and polluted as J.F.K.
7) Our Baseball stadium is better than yours. And we have Fenway Franks!
8) We had the first subway system.
9) Our Colleges are WAAAAY better than New York (MIT, Harvard, BU, and Tufts anyone?)
10) Our city is nicer looking then yours.

1)See my argument for Chicago against New York
2)The Windy City is THE BEST nickname
3)We're the BEST Democrats! We've had more Democratic National Conventions thatn any other city (most total cons too).
4)Again, large Irish-American population on the South Side
5)Again, More Polish people than any city other than Warsaw
6)O'Hare is the king of airports. See my prev. post.
7)Wrigley Field is better than Fenway (which is a close second) and way better than Shea or Yankee.
8)We have to one and only L
9)UIC is the largest medical college in the nation. We also have Northwestern, the best medical college in the nation.
10)Our city is the best looking

I am willing to ally with you for the time being to take this sucker and his "Chicago" down. Everyone knows East Coast cities are the best.

Please. You really think Boston, NYC, and Philly put together are better than Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Cleveland, Cinicinatti, Indianapolis, Kansas City, and The Twin Cities?
New York and Jersey
10-02-2005, 02:41
Can't we all just forget about this nonsense? Boston, NYC, it doesn't matter... becuase Chicago surpasses both of them.

1)the CTA (Chicago Tranportation Authority)is the largest CITY mass transit system per capita and the RTA (Regional Transportation Authority) is the largest METROPOLITAN mass transit system.
2)Home to the Sears Tower
3)Birthplace of the skyscraper and twice home to the world's tallest building (btw, there are at least 5 plans for other buildings taht will be taller than Freedoom Tower.)
4)Six Flags Great America, much bigger and better than Coney Island (Inverted rollercoaster invented here)
5)Diversity? Please. Chicago has the largest Polish population of any city outside of Warsaw and the largest Serbian population of any city save Belgrade. Tons of Irish on the southside. City is 26% hispanic.
6)Birthplace of Chicago style hotdogs and deepdish Pizza and home of Eli's, the most widely eaten cheesecake in the world.
7)You wan't to talk inefficiency? You wanna know why were known as the Windy City? Not becuase of wind, but our 'windy' politics. I couls go on forever on this one.
8)Aircraft? We're the World HQ of Boeing.
9)Gateway to millions? We're the trasportation hub of the nation. The center of US railways and O'Hare, the World's Busiest Airport.
10)Goodfellas? pfft... we got you beat in the mafia department. Chicago is the birthplace of the Mafia. Al Capone anyone? In the '20's so many US gangsters had fled to this one tiny town in Canada, it was deemed Little Chicago. And the movie part of Goodellas? We got Wayne's World, Ferrris Bueller's Day Off, Blues Brothers and those are just the cult classics! I could go on forever.

1)The MTA is still bigger and more complex in scope with the longest single train route of any city in the US. (The A line.)
2)Empire State Building..much prettier and better sounding than the Sears tower..I think Sears and I get an image of Bob Villa and flannel shirts.
3)None of those five are in Chicago are they?
4)Coney Island is still the first, Six Flags has no claim to being original.
5)Yes diversity. NYC has Haitains, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Columbians, Spanish, Italians, Polish, Koreans, Israelis, Chinese, Japanese, Russians(we've got one hell of a fast growing Russian community.)Irish, German, African..you name it we got it..hell we're home to the UN..you cant get more diverse than that.
6)Rays Pizza, and Nathans Hot Dogs. You have no claim to food! :-P
7)The second avenue subway has been in planning/construction stages since the 1920s-30s..just a few days ago the city council demanded to know where 300 mil disappeared to in the NYC education system and the MTA headquaters(our Metro-Transit Agency)being under "renovations" for the past 10 years with nothing going on
8)Pfft..we're home to multiple Corporate HQs. From Pzifer to Cantor Fitzgerald.
9)Ever hear of Ellis Island? NYC is still the major hub for immigration on the east coast.
10)Umm..Al Capone? Pfft..John Gotti, Lucky Luccianno, and a whole host of other Little Italy/Brooklyn gangsters. If it werent for Lucky..the mafia as we know it today would not exist, and Al Capone would just be a ruthless bootlegger. Capone was just a regional boss albiet a well known one.

And here's something Chicago doesnt have..Superheros.

Spiderman, Batman, and Superman. Spiderman is definate New York. Gotham? Nickname for NYC. Superman is more of a tilt as Metropolis can either be NYC or LA really.

Oh please, I could mention all of that..but as a life long New Yorker I forget other folks dont know those things exist..fine hold on:

1)Largest most complex mass transit system in the US.
2)Home of the statue of Liberty
3)Soon to be home to the tallest building on the planet(the new Freedom Tower)
4)Coney Island=Oldest Amusement Park in the US, I also think its the first one.
5)More languages per capita than anywhere else on the planet franky.
6)Pastrami, Pizza, Hotdogs, Cheese Cake, and finally...Canollis!
7)The Boston Tunnel project? Pfft...thats not half as big of a money hole as the Second Ave Subway. Boston cant even be inefficant better than NYC.
8)Home of the USS Intrepid, USS Growler and one of the famed Concord aircraft.
9)Gateway to millions
10)Goodfellas takes place in NYC...what credible mafia movie takes place in Boston?

Edit: There, better?

That's way friggin better. I particularly like number 7. Nobody sandbags better than us does. And add to number 10, Don Corleone lived on Staten Island.

Just to steer the thread a bit back towards the topic: I think, in a way, London.
It's got the best combination of good stuff: history (modern, ancient and in between), theatres, restaurants, opera, cinemas, monuments, bars, parks, museums (only because we stole all the good stuff off other people), it's the second largest city in Europe after Moscow (is that a good thing?) and the most multicultural.
It's home to four World Heritage sites (Westminster Abbey, Kew Gardens, the Tower of London and Maritime Greenwich), 200 museums, 18,000 listed buildings, the Globe theatre, St. Paul's Cathedral, 100 theatres and concert halls, 500 cinema screens, the world's busiest airport (Heathrow), and 2/3 of Greater London's area is either green space or water.
Other cities, (New York, Rome, Paris, Boston) may beat London at indivdual things, (Rome for ancient history, New York for multiculturalism, etc.) but none has the strongest combination of all the factors that make a good city.
Unfortunately, it is also home to the monarchy, Tony Blair and the London Underground, but they're not so bad once you get used to them.

Yeah, cause New York has none of that stuff. As far as I can tell, the only thing London has that NY doesn't is deep-fried Mars bars with chips on the side. And you can keep them.

What are you talking about? NY has historical sites that go back to the founding of the city. If what you're getting at is that New York isn't as old as London, you're right, of course, but it isn't without history.

As for bars, airports, cinema screens, museums, restaurants, operas, and parks, London has nothing on NYC. The Metropolitan Museum and the AMNH are second to none, we've got three major airports in the metro that combined blow the doors off Heathrow (and Heathrow ain't even that busy. Hartsfield, GA; LAX; and O'Hare are all busier than Heathrow). In spite of it's problems, the MTA is still fantastic public transportation. Our bars are open three hours later. We're more multicultural. We've got Broadway. We're known for good food, not brown sauce.

And we've got a better skyline.

The airport is always underconstruction. ;)

I haven´t been much outside my country. I went to Florida once and I tought the people were rude, the weater horrible (I mean, cmon, I live in a tropical country, I know what I´m talking about, you can´t have that much heat without any water on the air, the place is just dry) and disney was really cool!
But, once we´re talking about best city and not worst... the entire brazilian south is really beautiful, I would recommend Florianopolis. Rio is meant to be our postcard, but it´s kinda ugly IMO, so, if you come to brazil, go to the south, come to São Paulo (wich, *is* world´s third biggest metropolis) and then just go down.
Or you could go to the north also, Salvador and Florianopolis are nice place. But it really depens.
If you like cold, welcoming places go to the south
If you like hot, happy places go to the north.

Of all the cities that I've been to, Vancouver really is over-rated, but it does have its good parts. I cannot really say where the best city is, as most of the ones that I had been to I saw possibly their worst features. Toronto and Seattle must be up there somewhere.

In Europe, it is very hard to say. I liked Bern (Switzerland) but I had only been there for one day, hardly long enough to develop any kind of opinion of the place.

For the worst, that would be easy, Moscow. Ugly city if you ask me. It may have improved since the last time that I had seen it. I hope. Had not been to any of the third world cities to even include them on either side.

Edinburgh is a gorgeous place. I spent four years there as a student, and I still find it stunning. The main shopping street, Prince's Street, is open on one side looking over a park that is dominated by the castle rising above it on black rock. The New Town is one of the finest achievements of Georgian architecture in Britain, there are hardly any nasty areas in the centre (though there are some festy places on the outskirts where you never have to go), the nightlife is brilliant and the housing is first class. It was also at the heart of the Scottish Enlightenment, which has proved itself far better than the European one has.

Only problem? Those pesky Scots! :p
