Where is the anything but rap category? For that matter there's no irish category so the polls automatically void.

Where is ethnic, or *gasp* classiccal (which is really several different types all crammed in one category. *sigh*) I like both of those a lot. And there is so much crammed into rock. Try telling me that Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Styx, The Ramones, and Motorhead are all the same type of music.

[EDIT]I just read my post. I sound very bitter. Sorry. Not trying to be rude or degrading, sorry if it seems that way.

The best genres are not even on the poll.

1 - prog rock/metal
2 - world fusion

Two very different styles I know, but thats what plays at my place.

Firstly, I hate rap; secondly, I don't know the exact definitions of "Punk" and "Techno" music, thank God, but I must express my opinion that the best genre of the musical arts is the Romantic.

Championed by such great artists as Verdi, Chopin, Dvorak, and Wagner (one of my absolute favorites), it remains the symbol of wonderful progression and a new vision.

Of course, something must be said for the genre which spawned the Romantic period - the Classical. Mozart ranks highest among these, in my mind, immediately followed by Beethoven and Handel. (Who could forget Bach, the man from whom they all learned?)

And I wouldn't dare end this post without saying that Haydn's 62nd String Quartet is my favorite piece.

Truly, none can overlook some of the great classical-type pieces of the nineteenth century, such as Mahler's fifth symphony, anything by Wagner, and 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra'.

Out of the choices offered, Rock, specifically Guns N' Roses, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, CCR, Led Zeppelin, etc. Not this new Green Day crap.

Death metal, Gangsta rap and 1970's Country music...oh, I think I misread the question. I think Miles Davis, Johnny Rotten & Ludvig Van hold the torch for my favorite music...did I forget Willie Dixon? "qvak!".

I don't think it's possible to have a "best genre" really is it? I mean, I love my heavy metal, but if I want to chill out then it's classical music or something bluesy. If I'm driving then it's harder or indie rock 9/10. What I do think is more possible is to have a least favourite genre. I find most dance music crap unless I'm "in the right state of mind" and in the right type of club, and jazz... well... jazz. On occasion it actually sounds like everyone's playing the same song, so that makes it just about palatable. But it's largely self-indulgent toss. I know a guy who's a jazz musician on a cruise ship and he actually said that the majority of people he knows who like jazz are musicians. Hardly anyone who is not a musician likes jazz.

Leaving out Classical and Romantic is pretty inexcusable. You could easily just incorporate punk as a subgenre of rock.

I guess my favourites from that poll are probably Metal and Electronica (well, I'll assume that you meant that to be a part of alternative or dance).

But I like a lot of music. I'm listening to Elton John now and I was listening to Claude Debussy just before that.

Rock is pretty general so that's what I'm polling for. My three favorite bands are classic rock, alternative rock, and rap rock: AC/DC, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Rage Against the Machine. Generally I hate rap, but Rage is the exception.
Ollieland
08-02-2005, 00:26
As a generalisation, its rock. Check out anything from the BritPop era of nineties British music - Blur, Pulp, Sleeper, Echobelly. I suppose you could say it was Indie rock, but it was still great.

That would depend on your definitions of Rock and Metal. To me, rock and metal are two different genres.

[EDIT]Out of curiosity...are you American? I remember one of my lecturers saying something about lots of different styles (she mentioned electronica and pop as two examples I think) coming under a general "rock" heading in America. Then again she could have been talking absolute nonsense, she's not quite all there, bless her.

Hey, you know, you can sort of dance to "Come to Daddy" if you jerk around rather violently and at a rediculously fast pace. I just tried.

Damn, it's more tiring than trying to dance to gabba even...

Hee, I'd love to see someone try to dance to "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball".

"Classical" (i.e music written by composers, generally from a period of the last FIVE CENTURIES up until TODAY) includes the greatest genres.

All those other pieces of shit you call genres are sub-genres of the same old performer-artist-troubador love-songs-strum-guitars bullshit which isn't really even music but instead, hormonal angst given physical form for the purpose of looking good and getting money.
