What do you think is the best song ever written?

I think it is Don McLean's American Pie (http://www.rareexception.com/Garden/AmLyrics.php). The lyrics, the melody, it is nearly perfect.

Imagine by John Lennon. More so for the content than anything else, otherwise it would just be way too hard to answer this question.

God I hate that song so much. Ever seen the video? Its hard to take it seriously anymore as John patronisingly proclaims "Imagine no posessions, I wonder if you can?" while on a COLOSSAL grand piano!!

Ahem, but each to their own- its a pretty enough song if you just ignore that. For me, I'm not sure, I do rather like Hold on Hope by Guided by Voices, but I'm not sure its the best song ever. Maybe Jeanie's Diary by the Eels.

I've seen the video a few times and believe me, i can pick up the irony in the whole situation. Hell, i'm sitting at my computer watching my TV, in my bedroom with all my other posessions, while extolling the virtues of the song...lol.

Besides, when i think of the lyrics, i don't take them to mean that we need to literally give up our posessions, or religious beliefs, or country, just that we should get rid of the hatred that often arises between people because of them. That we shouldn't judge others based on those things. Now, obviously i don't know exactly what he meant when he wrote it, but that's what it means to me.

  you can't be fucking serious

anyway, for me, it would probably be ... damn, I've been thinking for like twenty minutes, I'll just pick the best song out of my current playlist (which is The Darkness - Permission To Land and Dream Evil - The Book of Heavy Metal), and then i'd have to go with Dream Evil - The Unbreakable Chain

The Abbey Road Medley (All of it), by The Beatles. All said, it's better than anything else I've listened to.

best song for me has got to be jimi hendrix - star spangled banner....eben though he didn't write it...or sing it for that matter...it is the kinda song that makes me proud to be an american but also conveys the horror that is war...no words are needed for either emotion.....

Mountains of Mourne Don Mclean.

That is a perfect song.
