Possible NS general social thread?

Chicken pi

Me and Word Games have been discussing the idea of creating a single Nationstates social thread, for casual conversation.

Here's the link: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8131664#post8131664

I would be interested to hear everyone's opinions on this, especially what the mods think of it.

The basic points are:
- it will provide somewhere for people to have a casual chat without it being considered spam. So, if you meet an old friend on the forum and want to catch up, the social thread will be the place to do it.
- it will serve as a signing on/signing off thread as well, so people can greet each other when they log on and say goodbye when they log off.

Good idea. Sounds like the perfect place to hang out when I'm too drunk to talk about politics anymore.

Might try pointing out to the mods that it could cut down on the number of threads that get hijacked by general chat.

That's a good point, I hadn't considered like that before.

Isn't there a chat thread which does precisely this called the Paradise Club?

But Paradise Club is more of a roleplay thread. Most of the conversations within it are done in-character and there is actually not very much general chit-chat. This thread would be for those who just want a simple, undemanding chat.

Heh heh, this isn't the social thread itself. I'm just gauging people's opinions. I realise you're probably joking, but it's one in the morning where I am, so I'm a bit too tired to be bothered by that. :)

A single thread? I think it's a darn good idea and would be effective against cutting spam. Just make sure that the very first post has like rules and information about it so that people don't get confused, you know?

It'll be impossible to keep up with what's going on though once it gets long. Why not just have an IRC room?

Because not everyone uses IRC. Also, I'm not familiar with IRC, but wouldn't it be even more difficult to keep up with what's going on?

Besides, why would you have to keep up to date with the conversation? It's a social thread, it'll be mostly people exchanging pleasantries or friends having light conversation.

Well, it may just be me. Maybe you're right, maybe for most people it would be easier... but in my experience, on forums I usually post what I think then come back hours later or the next day to see what replies were made to my message. With the assumption that everybody does this, it'd be hard to keep up with what's going on.... but maybe not everybody does that? I don't know. I'm not everybody else. :p

Yeah, I tend to post on the forum while I'm doing other things. So, I refresh it every five minutes or so if i'm at the computer.

On that note, I'm going to bed. Christ, it's half past one...

I'm not sure about that one, it could easily be misunderstood. OOC is often connected with RP, you see.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention to everyone that we haven't thought of a proper name for it yet. If people suggest potential names for this general social thread, it will be much appreciated.

Would it be nice to have all the irrelevant conversation centered in 1 thread? Yes.

Should that conversation even be taking place on this board.... I don't believe that's within the current rules. And I remember the Volcano... That thread was full of people coming and going, no roleplay, and quite honestly it was boring. If you care enough about people to say hi to them, get ahold of them via AIM, MSN, YIM, or on IRC.

I personally don't care if there is such a thread. I won't participate in it if it happens, but I don't really care if it's there.

Mmm, looks like a union thing to me. So now we're accually ment to WORK?

Aight, I can dig that.

First of all I think it needs a catchier name, like "The Bar", popular in other forums.

Probably someone else already said something like that, but... meh.

I'm uncertain whether we should be formal or informal with the name. "The Bar" is a good informal name, but we would need to make it clear that it isn't a semi-rp thread like Paradise Club.

By the way, Occidio, hopefully this will be less likely to be locked because it's union endorsed and it's more of a general social thread.

Personally I think there is much to big of a user base to have a single chat thread, there would be way to many conversations and would be next to impossible to follow why not just start an irc chat room?
Chinkopodia

Who says you'd have to follow all of it? Just join in to the curent train of conversation. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't, but as it hasn't been made yet, we can't tell.

Nah, my post was in response to all the Paradise Club style threads which have sprung up recently. I guess they aren't really social threads, though, more like semi-roleplay.

Okay. I've decided that it should have an official-sounding name (like "NS Social Thread" or something"), given the number of club threads we've been having.

Although I still like the idea of "the legitimate businessman's club". Maybe I'll start a club thread called that...

Anyway, I'll welcome any suggestions about the initial post. It needs to be made clear that it's a purely social thread, where people can chat about RL, post to say they're logging on or off, whatever.

That's great. I would probably add "socialise with online buddies" just to make it clear to people that they can chat about anything they like, but apart from that it says everything that needs to be said (all that I can think of, anyway).
