Okay, so it's getting to be about that time where I have to narrow down my choices for graduate schools to about four or so (I can only send my GRE scores directly to four w/o paying extra). I know a lot of people here are in college, so I thought I would ask your opinions about these schools. Please vote in the poll for FOUR of the graduate schools listed. I thank you in advance for ANY input you might have.

Here is the list and some info:

I can tell you which of those are good graduate schools for math. That doesn't help much, does it? Maybe you should consult somebody who knows something about sociology. As such, I've excluded myself from the poll.

Where one goes after college, to get post-graduate degrees, like masters

All of these schools are very good in Sociology and have research areas I am interested in. I just want overall general impressions of the schools. As far as I'm concerned the Sociology departments at all the schools are great, I just want some help narrowing them down using other factors.

OK, I think I get it. I should have mentioned that I have little understand of the American education system, but I assume that "a degree", and "a masters" mean the same things as in Britain.

it doesn't actually cost much extra to send out scores to additional schools, so i would highly recommend applying to more than 4. grad schools are getting a lot of applicants these days and have to turn down nearly everybody. which doesn't mean you aren't going to get in where you want, but its best to have a back up plan. and an inside connection.

if by other factors you mean the prestige of the institution's name, I'd go for Carnegie Mellon, Penn, Cornell, and Georgetown

as far as surrounding environments go, i can vouch for the relative coolness of washington dc, pittsburgh, and boston. and my cousin seems to be having a good time in philly.

CMU and Cornell are great schools, entirelyfor the reason that the ex's that I actually repscet are going there. If you go to CMU, talk to (Private ingame Message) me, and I'll hook you up with the profs at CMU/Pitt who visit these forums and SDMB- there are about a half dozen of them, half of them are in Sociology or Psychology.

Cornell, and you'll just have a certain level of dignity to you.

I have an ex-girlfriend (of sorts) that is married to some math professor there. Seems like an alright guy. But thats math.

That James Lipton guy is a suck up, but that's theater.

But that PhD sounds f'n great. I'm pretty envious of you being in that position. I want that PhD...dammit...

True true. I think my problem is that I'm inbred to take a more professional money making job. It's to do with the culture and the society I live in. It sucks when there's no money given for the arts or welfare.

As I may have mentioned to you(?) in another post, Penn has a really stellar Sociology program - although you said that you liked all the programs of those schools. But I really enjoyed Penn in general (for undergrad) - it has a great, social, attractive campus that happens to be in a fun city.

I've applied to the CMU SDS program (for psychology, actually), and it looks totally interesting - but I haven't visited the campus yet so I have no insight into anything other than what's on their page.

Your opinion means a lot to me, esp since you actually went to Penn. I will visit Penn probably in the summer. Did you get into CMUs program? I know Pittsburgh is an awesome city and I will visit CMU sooner than later. My boyfriend went to AIP and loves Pittsburgh, so convincing him to move there wouldn't be a problem. He wants to make a trip there soon, so I am going to go and visit CMU then. Their SDS program is so unique, how could I not consider it? ;)
