Quick question...
'
I just noticed there is a switch on the back of my computer's power supply. It is red and has 2 settings, 115V and 230V, I assume that those mean volts....

Should I have it on 115 or 230?

Check your instruction manual or call the company to see what to do.

This seems like somtehing a friend told me about.

He flicked the switch and fucked the computer up.

I'd leave it alone.

What Keep it on 115. Unless you have it plugged directly into a 220 outlet. You probably don't.

your house current is 110, thats what you puter should be at

the 230 is for european systems where they commonly have 220 house current

[Emphasis mine.]

If it's working properly, then leave it alone!

Power systems in America run on something around 120 volts. European power systems run on a higher voltage, if I remember correctly. That switch is to allow you to adapt your computer to the power grid you're going to plug it into.

If you flip that switch, then you switch it into a mode where it cannot deal with the power supply that it's currently plugged into. This could damage or destroy the electronics in your computer.

An electrical engineer could give you a better explanation than I. Bottom line: Don't flip that switch.

Ok, thanks.

I was thinking of switching it, but I decided to post on NS because someone more electricty savvy would know about this.

the 220 is for the UK.

120V is for the US, if you live in the US, DO NOT CHANGE IT!

Your PSU will explode, and I'd know, I blew up an old PSU once for fun.

I would assume you should set it to whatever voltage comes through the mains in your country. I think it's 230V in all of Europe. 115 might be american.

If you switch it back and forth lots of times really quickly, you can make something cool happen.

You're a pretty stupid mick, typical though, hard drinking and not caring about your country.
