Queen get it for originality, sing-alongability and style.

When did the nominations come up though cos I'd have said that the greatest sing ever is "Always" by Bon Jovi.

Stairway to heaven!
I mean, bohemian rhapsody is absolutely great and is quite hard to choose beetween the two, but, ah, stairway is magical, it is the ultimate rock song.

I voted for Stairway to Heaven on the grounds that there have been some very reasonable cover versions - Dolly Parton and Dredd Zeppelin spring to mind, and who can forget The Massed Kazoo Orchestra's magnificent assault on the song?

The origonals of both are of course strong contenders for worst rock songs ever.

Neither are the greatest song, though I much prefer "Bohemian Rhapsody". It's content and musical quality are much better, especially the latter. "Stairway to Heaven" is just mediocre, I do not see the appeal.

But some other songs that really kick ass are Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb", Pearl Jam's "Do the Evolution", Tool's "Eulogy", Bill Whelan's "Reel Around the Sun", and Clannad's "I See Red". And don't even get me started on Nine Inch Nails. "Something I Can Never Have", "Heresy", "Reptile", "Dead Souls", "Into the Void", "The Fragile", "Closer", "Hurt", and "La Mer", are the first ones to come to mind.

Well, while I don't consider either of these songs to be the best rock songs ever, I do consider Stairway to Heaven to be the superior one...

...even with the subliminal message :D

If you mean the part about the lyrics containing some lines refering to devil worship, that is only coincidence.

Sums up my view perfectly. I like Stairway because it's easier to play on guitar, however.

But what the hell is so good about it? Musically, it is nothing special. The message isn't anything mind blowing either. It must be like the "Mona Lisa", then. It really isn't anything special, it's no marvelous piece of art. It just happened to be da Vinci's favourite, so now it is the most famous piece of canvas in the occident.

It's an intangible thing. It isn't technically stunning and the message sounds like something thought up over a joint and a plate of pizza rolls but when it's all brought together it just gets it right. I happen to really like the song, but I know quite a few people with taste in music that I would consider good that don't care for the song. You either really like it or you really don't. Slightly different then the reason people like Mona Lisa.

I still think the greatest rock song ever is La Villa Strangiato though. It's a crime that it's not the only choice in this poll.

Eh, it's certainly not bad, but I don't see how it could be considered the best of anything.

Stairway to Heaven may be the single governing force behind the creation of the bands Boston, Journey, Styx, or any of those other cheesy hair-band/arena rock amalgamations that destroyed rock for a few years and still ruins classic rock radio.

Page and Plant should be ashamed for combining overly simplistic, super-macho masterbatory guitar playing, and overtly homoerotic vocals. They should be outcast for the bastard child Arena Rock that they gave birth to.
