What's your favorite planet?

The Plutonian Empire

Well? What is it? :D

You only need to look at my screenname to figure out what my favorite planet is... :D

EDIT: BTW, I'm talking about astronomy just so you know.

I don't see Pern on the list. :D

I think Earth will win big, but I chose Venus. It's my favourite for visibility from Earth, and because of its astrological symbolism, which is love, attraction and refinement.

You know... technically Pluto is really more of a Kuiper belt object than a full fledged planet :D

Had to vote for Jupiter - it's so big and has so many cool moons. Jupiter's moons alone are cooler than most planets!

It was a tossup between Mars and Jupiter. Mars is more famous, but Jupiter is superior I believe. The flowing melody makes it one of the best musical pieces ever composed, in my humble opinion.

We are talking about Holst's "The Planets", right?

Of course! Jupiter's main theme was made in to a beautiful hymn too! I can never get it out of my head once it's in there though. Just thinking about it makes me happy

Then you are obviously not Brad Tombaugh.

Beyond that...

Clyde Tombaugh was born in 1907, and as such, his parents would have been probably about 20-40. Given this age range, for a parent to have been from the same parents, and you be born (on the uttermost extremes, the maximum childbearing age we're going to use is 50) your parents would have had to have been born in 1937. And in turn, you'd have had to have been born in 1987. This is at the maximum extreme. Highly unrealistic. And since to be currently thirteen you'd have to have been born in 1991 at the earliest, well, you see why I'm skeptical.

I didn't. It was a good shot, but was not an absolute proof of identity. It's not his fault that DNA evidence and first-person testimony are hard to present in truly verifiable form online.

You think that Mars is more famous than Jupiter? I think you've spent too much time in a marching band.I guarantee that more Americans have heard Mars than have heard Jupiter, if only because it was featured in the trailer for X2.

And have you heard the Cavaliers' rendition of Jupiter? Far superior to their version of Mars.

I have to agree - Mars is the more famous piece. Mostly because it's been used as incidental music for movies and TV countless times. Jupiter is blissfully spared that sort of overplaying. Jupiter might be better known among people who listen to and play classical music though.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Mars has really only been popular in the past few years. The first time that I heard The Planets, Jupiter was the only one I recognized. Mars sounded eerily similar to a track that John Williams wrote for Star Trek: Generations.

hrmmm... I don't know. I make a habit of making my non musically inclined friends listen to the planets, and none of them ever recognize Jupiter. About 1/3 of them recognize Mars.

It's not a big sample - probably only 8 people or so, but I think Mars is generally more recognized.
