Myself as well. I do not believe that anyone should be actively tortured for any reason. Incarceration for life seems good enough for me.

It is clearly what they deserve, but you are right about a civilized society. To lower ourselves to do what they deserve is to become too much like them.

Apparently because this was done without the couple being in their right mind (or some bullshit - one time when the Canadian system is too lax), they got something like three years or something insanely lax... I'm going to try and track down the story. It's just so unbelieveable.

Just because they were possible born with fetal alcohol syndrome and were victims of attention deficit disorder is NO REASON whatsoever to justify such behaviour on the part of the parents.

The original sentence was 9 months, it had then been increased to 4 years for the man and five for the woman... Though still fairly lax.

Given that they appear to be travelling through the Southern States, in a publically identified vehicle, I have my severe doubts as to whether they will ever be tried. Found lynched or otherwise mutilated, is I woulds believe a far more likely outcome.

Both of these are true. The problem is that it just doesn't seem like a fitting punishment for anything. They do not suffer, or learn from their lessons. They just move down a notch on how well their brain works.

Justice is there to prevent the rest of society from being affected by the actions of a minority.

Due to the possibility of mistakes being made, this also makes me oppose the death penalty. (And there will never be a 100% correct system, so I shall always opppose it.)

Life without the possibility of parole is an ideal punishment, anyway, so long as they don't have creature comforts.

Think about it. 30-70 years of the same old routine over and over and over... no chance of a change... with the Great Unknown looming closer and closer every day in your mind.

I don't really know. I've forgotten far to much when I did some research on neurology. The only sections of the brain I really remember anything about are the prefrontal lobe and the medulla oblongata. I think Dempublicents could probably offer some good information on it, however.
