Aside from the fact that he sounds more like a right-winger to me(the right-wingers are the ones who try to get rid of every potentially-offensive thing, in my experiance), I agree. I mean, it's just part of a word; it has nothing to do with the meaning of it. It's like saying that the word nosegay(which simply means a bouquet/small bunch of flowers/something similar) is offensive just because the word "gay" is in it.
