Internet Friends

Who here has met friends they have made on the internet in real life?
I'm about to actually meet my first internet friend, and I wondered what your experiences of it were like?

Were they how you expected them to be?

Did you get on in RL?

Did it change your friendship?

I have never ever ever ever met an internet friend unless i knew them off the net before i met them on the net...

I did meet one person.

I had known her since I was in grade 10 (which was way back in 98/99). I met her in person just last year in August.

It was a good experience. It strengthed our friendship! I can actually trust her now.

I've talked to a few people on the phone before, or used the mic and webcam. I would happily meet with some of them in person if not for the hundreds of miles thing.

;) yes, I know I can. But, I have two levels of trust. I have one for online friends and one for RL friends - one is believing you are who you say you are and the other is more of a now that I know you in person kind of trust...

BTW, (if and) when I do go out to Vancouver, I'll drop you a line ;)

After about three years, a bunch of people from my IRC RPG went on a roadtrip and met up in a few people's hometowns. I got to meet a few of the people I had been lurking around with for so long --even people I fought with constantly. We all got along great -- not even one little argument.

Haha, glad to hear it - I thought for a minute that you didn't -- I was kind of hurt! haha!

I've met two people, one became a friend in person, the other stayed as just an internet friend.

There're only two people online I'd ever consider meeting in real life. Both live in other countries.

So that would be a 'no'.

A whole bunch. Being on a german forum & chat for roleplayers it was quite natural for some of us to meet at a Con sooner or later, we dont have that much distance between us. Of them five or six are good, reliable friends. You know, where you can call in the middle of the night to ask for help. Or expect them to call you and loan money that you get back a half year later. ;)
And two of my last relationships started off from an internet board.

Pre-WWW here in Las Vegas we had a 64 line BBS with 2000 users. I was around 13 years old and thought it was normal to meet people you met online. So we all met up for years, great time through High School & College. I met my first girlfriends that way and many of us got married, all from meeting strangers on the computer.

When I got into EQ1 I met two people from out of state in person from there and half a dozen more locals I did not know before. Everyone I know has a web presence; most people I know have at least two websites. Meeting internet folks is commonplace.

When I started playing Star Wars Galaxies, I met a nice couple from Southern California. They have been out to visit the Vegas Crew a few times. Last Halloween over a dozen players from around the county came to Vegas, some were single, others married, and even one couple brought the kids. They had a blast playing tourist & sightseeing. Most of us just got drunk and went to strip clubs.

So yeah, my whole life it’s been a rewarding experience meeting people off the internet. In the beginning I was pretty gullible and I was let down expecting to meet the hot sexy blonde with the sport car. After puberty and the idiotic notion that the web was a dating service, I had nothing but rewarding experiences meeting new, lifelong friends.

A considerable number. Some from 'forum meets', some after chatting a few months. Experiences varied. In one case it simply didn't click in real life, different bodylanguage, not fitting the mental picture etc. That contact dwindled away a few days afterwards. Others on the other hand I continued to see IRL more often - in two cases even with some romantic interest ;) - though due to the distance necessary to travel not very stable relationships.

In general the contact with the one-on-one contacts changed more than that of people met of fora - for better or for worse. Just don't expect too much, except having fun :)

I don't know if I'd want to. Perhaps in a neutral spot. I don't even like people in meet RL to know where I live or my phone number. I guess I'm very self protective. Maybe paranoid. I have an unlisted phone number, privacy manager, caller ID and call block. I hate my privacy being encroached upon, and prefer to be in control of all contact, at least until I know someone really well.

I've met quite a lot of people from forum communities I've been a member of. And I'd say that largely they were nice people, but the key that surprised me so far is that the people they are online is the same as the people they are in the flesh. I've never met anyone who isn't what they claim to be. Not that I'm suggesting this is the norm. I'm quite sure there's plenty of people on this forum that I really hope aren't like they come across on here. ;)

I've met a few, but they were also friends of a friend of mine, so I don't think that counts

have met a few friends IRL, that i first met online. One who's become one of my closest friends, and one who ended up as my girfriend :) :)

Wanna meet more, but, since i live in Sweden, and most Online friends (that i wanna meet IRL) live in North america and asia, well.. it's kinda expensive flying to all thos distant places..
