Intrinsic Artistic Value overcomes Political Disagreements in Art

Yep. That's what I said.

If I disagree with something artistic politically I'm not going to not see it if it is high quality. For example the musical (not movie) Evita. I don't exactly like the glorification of a Latin American dictatress, but the musical's artistic value is far superior to the political distaste.

Hmm... dictatress? That's a new word for me. But anyway, what constitutes artistic value, though? John Robin Sharpe got off on that one charge of child pornography for his stories about... well, I don't think we need to get into what they were about.... because they were decided to have "Artistic Merit". Now, can we genuinely make a judgement about the value of something, and if it fails to live up to whatever standard you set, can it be restricted?

Let me phrase this another way: what if Evita was a sub-par musical, but a musical nonetheless? Does it still have sufficient artistic value for you to put up with?
