Try this. There are ten puzzles, and if you get all of them right you get to enter some special site. I've got all except the last, and I cannot work it out! Can anyone do any better than me?

I'm willing to offer hints, on the condition that if anyone does get number ten they help me.

This is allowed on this forum, isn't it? I haven't broken any rules, have I? I looked at the rule thread, but I didn't see anything that this would come under. I just want to know what No. 10 is!

Oh wait, I just saw your second bit - never mind.

Try to get all the 5-letter words from both blocks and then pair them up; like SHARKSPIRE (not the solution).
South Osettia
02-02-2005, 16:29
what about 5? i dont understand the question, could i get the answer

Basically, you have to get from X to Y on both grids, noting down the letters you pass as you do so. Once you've done it, you'll get two five-letter words, which when you put them together form the 'password' to the next stage.

A lot of people will be stumped by this, I'll bet. ;)

hal

1. <computer> HAL 9000, the murdering computer on the
spaceship in the science fiction classic "2001, A Space
Odyssey" by Arthur C. Clark.

"HAL" is "IBM" with each letter changed to the one before
and there is an unconfirmed rumour that 9000 is the sum of the
various IBM computer numbers that were in service at the time.
However, in the sequel "2010", Clarke emphatically denies that
HAL's name is supposed to be "one step ahead of IBM". It is,
rather, short for "heuristic algorithm".

I don't know the answer yet, but it's not IBM. I know that's a hint though.

there's 4 cups, the man says:

cup A: 1
cup B: 1 or 0
cup C: 2
cup D: 0 or 2

there is a total of 4 balls

it says 3 out of those 4 statements are lies

in the picture it shows that cup A has no balls under it, therefore, the first statement is a lie. this also means the other 3 cups add up to 4

if the man is lying about cup B there must be 2 balls under it
if the man is lying about cup C there must be 0 or 1 balls under it
if the man is lying about cup D there must be 1 ball under it

the man is lying about 2 of them, all you have to do is figure out which combination of 2 lies and 1 truth makes it add up to 4

the word 'here' is in horsemen, take it out and it leaves you with 'osmn' rearrange that and you get 'noms' which is french for names, identites is french for identities, i'm sure you can see the connection between names and identities. ethernet also has 'here' in it, take it out and you'r eleft with 'tent' , i'm sure you can see the connection between tent and dwellings, the answer has the word 'here' scrambled up in it as well as a word that is connected to weave

HAL does stand for something though i'm not sure what but i thonk it actually got it's name from each letter being 1 letter before each letter in IBM in the alphabet

H comes before I
A comes before B
L comes before M

so you're given the word TEN and n the alphabet:

T comes before U
E comes before F
N comes before O
