I can point out so many flaws in that poll. Well. Maybe just a couple.
1. U2 started in the 1980's. They were immensely popular in the 1980's.
2. Aerosmith started as early as the 1970's. Yet again. Immensely popular pre 1990's.
3. Bon Jovi was, yet again, in the 1980's. Disappeared for most of the 1990's.
4. Nirvana, along with a few other bands, STARTED a new musical movement, grunge. Starting new genres proves to be difficult (look at the Ramones... some don't even consider them the fathers of punk...which they pretty much are).
What, you included Blink 182 but left out RATM? Pfft.
Nirvana.
4. Nirvana, along with a few other bands, STARTED a new musical movement, grunge.
Not really, they popularised it, like the Sex Pistols did to punk. Unlike the Sex Pistols, they were probably the best at what they did (IMHO), but Soundgarden, The Melvins and others were around commerically for a few years before Nirvana released Bleach...

Your split between choices might not have needed splitting if Cobain hadn't died so soon. He and Michael Stipe had been discussing a collaboration. It could have been really awesome.
I don't think U2 really needs to be there, since they are largely viewed as the Band of the 80's. While I enjoy all their albums, Zooropa and Pop had nowhere near the appeal of War and the Joshua Tree.
I chose R.E.M., myself. Automatic for the People was a HUGE album, certainly one of the top five of the decade. Monster was heavy and really good too, and New Adventures in Hi-Fi is probably my personal favourite to-date.

Guess what... Most of those aren't even 90s bands, they're bands that happen to have still existed in the 90s. I'm guessing the poster is around 14? Just by the choices for best and the fact that most of the bands had their prime times before the 90s. Not that I have anything against 14 year olds, I teach them all day, in fact.

Radiohead's a tough choice, because they're hardly "rock" anymore. Alternative.
edit: I realize this doesn't say "best rock band", but considering most of the other groups up there, it's hard to compare Radiohead with them.
Also, Blink 182 is not a band. It's what happens when you a troop of monkeys breaks into the back of a music store.

They all suck, find some Schlong on EBay, that is real music, one of the few solid bands that was around for all of the 90's, along with Skankin' Pickle. Nirvana is just a bad version of the Replacements, U2 was good in the 80's, REM is the only good band on that list(in the 90's), and Green Day is just Operation Ivy without the energy or talent. Oh, and Blink is to Green Day what Green Day is to OPIV.

Try again and do a little research.
U2, first album "Boy", released October 1980. First 90s album was their 9th album, "Achtung Baby", released November 1991.
REM, first album "Chronic Town", released August 1982. First 90s album was their 9th album, "Out Of Time", released March 1991.
Bon Jovi, first album "Bon Jovi", released 1984. First 90s album was thier 5th album, "Keep the Faith", released 1992.
Aerosmith, first album "Aerosmith", released January 1973. First 90s album was their 16th album, "Pandora's Box", released November 1991.
RHCP, first album "Red Hot Chili Peppers", released 1984. First 90s album was their 6th album, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", released 1991.

Much as I love Bad Religion, it has to be admitted though that they haven't exactly gone anywhere with their sound since their first release back in '81(?) - everything since then has pretty much been variations on a theme.
I had problems with the given, but I finally voted as I thought I would ...
Green Day. I'm a huge fan and their the only punk band worth mentioning (Blinbk 182 are hyped-up Pop versions of GD, in my opinion)--

Live and Tool? Pearl Jam wouldn't even belong on there even though they are better than some of the bands listed.
Pearl Jam is over a million times better than Nirvana. I'm sorry, but if Kurt didn't off himself, Nirvana would have died off fairly quickly. Kurt wasn't a genius and I think his lyrics was horrid. I mean, they're okay, but they are wwwwwaaaayyyy over-rated. Pearl Jam has been kicking for a long time and STILL sell out concerts within minutes. I think their music has been amazing from the beginning and even their last album was pretty good.
Live, yes, but that is a personal opinion. Who hasn't heard Lightning Crashes, I Alone, Selling the Drama, and White, Discussion? Not to mention on a lot of markets Lakini's Juice and The Dolphin's Cry were very popular. In 1991-1992 they had a pretty good following and Pain Lies on the Riverside got some decent airplay; but I will admit it wasn't until Throwing Copper that they took off.
Tool is also a personal opinion. I guess they are just one of those bands that defines a generation but never was played much on the radio. ;)
I don't reckon they were consistent either. Opiate and Aenima are fantastic, but Undertow and Lateralus are a bit meh.

Pearl Jam are boring. They were better as Mother Love Bone but still nothing to write home about. They've only survived so long because they're fairly mainstream. In terms of muscial talent and technical prowess...I would have to say they were THE best band of the last 20 years...I'm open to other opinions, but I've never heard a band that could play that well, that consistently, and over such a long period of time.
As I stated before, I did not vote, for the same reason as Eichen...the absence of Nine Inch Nails on the poll.
Technically an 80's band (Pretty Hate Machine was released in '89), but had it not been for the emergence of Grunge, it would be highly likely that Nine Inch Nails would have taken the place of Nirvana in terms of the musical culture of the decade.

right, so we've covered the early 90's..
and the late 90's?
it really pisses me off that people completley undermine the music that came in the late 90's, just because of turds like Fred Durst who give it a bad name.
Korn, for example, created a completely new genre.. does that mean nothing?
yes they were ripped off by about 200 bands and so everyone sorta got bored of hearing the same old thing but surely if you've influenced that much then your worthy of some recognition.. regardless of how fat you are these days.
but because all of that was completely ignored i'm gona go for Nirvana because although they weren't technically brilliant or the innovators of grunge, they did inspire a whole generation of people.. that alone is enough.
